No football till Monday, so thought I’d get the NSC musical juices kick started with a debate thread 😂

Greatest ever rock and roll vocal performance?

I will kick off with John Lennon’s version of Twist and Shout, apparently recorded with a heavy cold and at the end of a long studio session, even after over half a century later it’s still a classic performance.

'There are Dance Halls and Theatres with Acoustics worse than Here, not forgetting the extra Facilities, such as the Tea Machine, just along the corridor.
So to all our mates like Kevin*, Caravan and the old Pink Floyd, allow me to recommend Top Gear, despite its extraordinary name...'

*Kevin Ayers - ex band member which should give you a clue who they are and who is singing, final clue it was a BBC Maida Vale session from a long time ago...

Joe Cocker - With a little help from my friends
Robert Plant - Immigrant song
Roger Daltrey - Won't get fooled again

Or possibly Overkill, sublime.

All have our favourite 'Head songs, mine is Keep Us on the Road, always the finale at Witton Albion* Social Club Bikers night...

* Witton Albion were my Dad's Team, still in existence but Central Ground including Social Club now a Sainsbury's, progress eh?

No takers on my Tea Machine lyric as yet I see...

Stevie Marriott, take your pick of a number of songs

This clip of just the vocals is fantastic. Random fact, he was the first choice of Led Zep as singer but contractual and Mafia like control stopped it happening...allegedly

Great call (and never a big fan of Robert Plant). And just this once, I'm actually going to agree with Lenny Rider that the John Lennon vocal on Twist and Shout was a monster

a galaxy far far away
The one from the modern day, (and comparing old singers with new, is a bit like comparing old footballers with new, it's best not to try) that always stands out for me is Matt Bellamy from Muse. No particular song in mind, just his vocal range always stands out from the crowd in my mind.

Yep - anything by Roger Daltrey; arguably the top rock singer of all.

......... and Marriott, definitely in the same league. Didn't know about the Led Zep connection - interesting.

Finally - maybe a bit controversial in the light of his later work, early Rod Stewart is up there with them.

Rod is definitely up there, his early stuff before he became a Faces pop star especially. The less said about the later stuff the better imo

John Fogerty is up there too for me

I open the thread knowing that I'm straight in with John Lennon and blow me it's what you start with.
