[Albion] Fallen out of love with The Albion

This is a really weird feeling. I have totally fallen out of love with the club I have followed since I was 7. I have been there through thick and thin: cup final, 2 play off finals, Gillingham, the promotion game, our first win in the Prem and 2 wins vs Utd, but I’m done.

I am In the Potter out camp (which doesn’t make me a bad or intellectually challenged person) but crikey it runs deeper than that! Clearly Covid is a factor, football without fans is kind of pointless. I also have to do my best to protect my mental health and this season has run against that. I find our style of play just that purely a style with virtually no substance. I want leadership that reeks of passion from our manager and i find listening to him simply depressing, where is the inspiration?

Will I call back in love with Brighton? I won’t fall in love with another team but I’m considering a dalliance with non league footy next season.

Anyone else experiencing similar feelings, or is it just me?

I'm contemplating not watch the game today. May just have it on in background, while I make use of two hours. We'll see.

I don't quite feel that strongly. I am Potter in but it is so frustrating that we haven't had the results our performances have merited. It is either Albion or no-one for me. I think I'll always go or follow us closely. Covid has spoiled this and last season immensely but there again so has var, and more pettily, little things like no water bottles with caps and no flasks.

Be prepared to fall back in love once the season starts with all fans back, whichever league we are playing in.

I fell out of love with the albion / football for most of the 1990's.

It was only seeing the crowd at Withdene from passing trains that rekindled the fire and got me interested again.

No.

I can’t wait until we’re all back watching games live. The crowd at the Amex really get going when we’re on top of a team and creating chances, which we have been all season.

If they win 3-0 today you will be back in. Hopefully if we can survive we can do a Aston Villa or Leicester next season and push up the table. We have a very young team.

Yes, two years ago because of the style of play, I was straight back on board when it changed. You’ll be back once we revert to all passion and fist pumping

We all have different expectations of what we want from the Albion, there is no right or wrong.

I know the feeling well, we are THE most frustrating team in the world to support, from plumbing the depths of despair with some woeful performances and sucker punch defeats, to scaling the dizzy heights of winning at Anfield, it's the Albion way and will no doubt continue ever thus! It's an addiction and try as you might, you cannot get the Albion out of your blood.

I started watching the Albion as a nipper in the mid 70s. Some seasons have been a struggle, some have been joyous, most have been just ‘another’ season. But I really can’t understand when people say they’ve fallen out of love with the Albion. They’re the team I support. The team I was born to follow. Whatever happens on the pitch I’ll still say I’m a supporter, crikey we expect the Albion to continually let us down, don’t we? We know the script, surely. That’s what makes the occasional success all the sweeter.
I think your disappointment at the way things have panned out this season, combined with COVID etc have just made it a struggle to get motivated about them, I’m not sure that’s the same as falling out of love.

I think Covid is a massive thing. I just know I'll be so much more positive when I can go to a game, have a beer with my mates and sing and shout properly.

There are four of us that travel to games together, me, my mate and our two sons, and we meet another good mate and his boys there and sit with them. While my son is still very into football and can't wait to get back, my mate's son has said in lockdown that he doesn't want to watch at all any more. He's got into skateboarding and mountain biking which he can still do in lockdown. Meanwhile I haven't seen my other mate and his sons at all for over a year. I used to really look forward to our catch ups.

Mate's son's ticket is pretty much paid for anyway as neither of us have taken refunds so we're going to keep it in the hope that a trip out to Falmer and seeing everyone again will rekindle an interest but, on the face of it, we've lost a new young supporter thanks to the pandemic.

As for me, I wrote this yesterday. It sums up everything that's wrong with lockdown football and the Premier League.

I can understand your viewpoint, results have been rough since we’ve been in the top league.

For myself I can see what the club is trying to do, develop and promote young players which I think is the right approach. The bad runs of losses don’t help but it’s a bit of a patience game, hanging on in there until the production line comes good.

We’ll get there. Hopefully.

That’s the problem I won’t, even the Liverpool win gave only a blip of pleasure. I hope it comes back but right now I’m cold to it.

I can totally understand your feelings which I'm sure quite a few will agree with.

I made the decision not to renew my ST for next year purely through my hatred of VAR, so if we got relegated I might regret that decision.

All I would say is give your local non-league side some support as I have done recently with Shoreham. Yes, Covid has obviously hit the non league too but for me I found it a far more pleasurable experience. Being able to stand at a match, no rip off prices, and the ground is for me just a 15 min walk from home. There is much to be said for supporting your real 'local' side so give it a go. It might rekindle your love of the game.

I'll always be an Albion fan (35 years a ST holder will do that to you) so will always follow our fortunes, but for me the local scene is far more enjoyable and rewarding. Players playing for the love of the game and not obscene wages. Give it a try.

Its a strange time and not actually being at games is bound to affect people in different ways.
I am a little surprised by the comments around passion, given that the club haven't appointed a manager who projects passion since Poyet. What do you want a manager who gets sent to the stands twice a season who jumps into the crowd when we score and who is continually fined for post match comments.
The deadpan approach is the modern way but it does mean that passion isn't there and it is no doubt displayed on the training pitch and in the dressing room.
Style of play for many is really a substitute for results. Win and the style is fine lose and it's not great. From you time supporting the Albion you will know that we rarely do mid table No pressure football. So the glass is nearly always full or empty.
Hopefully crowds will be back in large numbers shortly and you will be tempted along and recover your Albion mojo.

I can understand your view but I do think it is temporary and as others have said our situation has been hugely exaggerated by Covid, this season has been solely about keeping a business alive and the advertising money coming in. I don't look forward to games on telly and our results are incredibly frustrating. They harped on about football having to be on telly for our mental wellbeing but for me it has become the opposite. I am really looking forward to live football telly football can do one.

I am falling out of love with football in general, COVID, VAR and cheating players and totally inept refs. Have a decision to make about renewing my 1901 5 year deal in the next few weeks, think I will if we go down to a more enjoyable less corrupt league, but big decision if we stay up. I have not lost my mojo or love for the Albion, as we have the best team and squad we have ever had, just the premier league and all the stuff that goes on it, plus so frustrating that teams who are so poor to watch are above us in the league, so maybe they have it right and us wrong.

I don’t look forward to our games at all at the moment. I honestly can’t remember enjoying the Albion experience less in my 35 years of support. It’s like watching a car crash unfold but feeling compelled to watch.

I think Its a mix of us being the most frustrating to watch in my memory (maybe I’m erasing the Case management years), not being there on the day, VAR/refs, no other supporters in the ground, not being able to socialise with friends, and almost every single Albion match being a rerun of Groundhog day.

If you really believe that Potter speaks to his players and comes across the same way he conducts those incredibly dull press conferences, I’d question your statement about not being intellectually challenged.

Every manager puts on a certain face for the public, there’s no way he’d be able to drill a side to create the hundreds of more chances we saw under CH if he spoke to them like he speaks to the hacks (which I’m sure is the only experience you have of him). The fans are the ones who are meant to bring the passion and emotion. I want the manger to be the ‘grown up’, to be calculating, strategic and calm. I think I might fall out of love with the Albion too if we had the sort of emotionally charged wreck you seem to be advocating? You have Keegan, I’ll keep Potter thanks.

I've not completely fallen out of love with the Albion but there's a lot I don't like about top flight football in general and about decisions at the club also. Especially recently.

I'm all for Graham Potter though. Love the football on show and think we are so close to becoming a very successful side. In fact, even if we go down I think there's a bright footballing future at the club.
