Anyone out there a dab hand at using puddletag in Linux to tag album art work, and willing to help try to solve a problem?

If not, move along now while you have the chance, things are likely to get very boring, rather quickly

I've used it in the past. Might be able to remember something. What's the problem?

Ok, thanks.

When I tagged album art to albums it only tagged to the first track. On some devices the album art would still show up on every single track within the album when played back. But on my Cowon it would only show up on the first track, as the album cover if you like.

I then discovered a way to tag every single track within the album in one go in puddletag, just by highlighting all tracks withing the album and re tagging. But now those albums tagged this way will transfer to devices, but they don't show up in the device, so naturally can't be played. However, they are there as I can see them when the device is connected to the pc. When I open the album on the pc, all tracks now show as a box with 0s and 1s inside, rather than as an audio file. However, all tracks do play on the pc.

Not sure if I've explained it clear enough, but what I'm trying to find is what I've done wrong and how I can I fix the broken albums.

Well, it's been a while, but I certainly remember the issue with album art being embedded in the first track. I did update each track individually for a while but then found that if my player found a cover.jpg in a folder it used that for all tracks. Don't recognise your other problem I'm afraid. There's a python script called eyeD3 that will add album art that would be simple to wrap a script round.

If you don't have any joy, I can recommend Bliss.

It costs £59, which might not be a price you're willing to pay, but if you have an extensive/complex music library, it's well worth it.

It's really thorough and capable of solving most problems, though this makes it a fairly technical app to get to grips with. However the people there are very helpful to respond to any enquiry.

I used it to help move a 55,000 song library from iTunes onto an Astell & Kern DAC player, which runs on Andriod, so there was an absolute forest of compatibility issues to sort – and Bliss managed to unpick them all, thanks to some very clear, precise and specialised instructions from their Helpdesk.

Thanks. Yeah, I found that a phone will use the cover jpeg for all tracks. So for that device Puddletag was fine. My problem came when using the Cowon DAP. I was silly really, as I really didn't need album art for every track, only the album cover, but I thought I was being clever in going back to tag every track so they all showed up. Lesson learnt that I should have been contented with the music and just the cover from Puddletag. Thankfully the vast majority of the albums I've broken were already backed up on an external hard drive, but there's about 30 that I'd broken before backing up so now they've got to be re ripped and tagged.

Thanks for the eyeD3 heads up, although it may be a bit beyond me, especially as the plot now thickens

I now have a Sony DAP as well and that doesn't recognise any of the album art at all. I have discovered that the reason is because it doesn't recognise Progressive .jpeg, only Baseline .jpeg  I somehow managed to convert a progressive jpeg into baseline using GIMP. I then tried Kid3 and managed to tag that baseline jpeg to all the tracks in it's album and it showed up fine in the Sony, phone and Cowon.

I've tried in vain, so far, to find a Linux program that will batch convert all my progressive jpegs to baseline. I don't think GIMP can do it as a batch, only individually, and that'll take forever. I did see a code script that should work, but I'm a bit reluctant to go into terminal and end up messing things up. I can't seem to get Windows programs to run in Wine, so IrfanView is out of the question.

Any ideas then please on a program that might do the batch converting?

Once I get a good jpeg converter going, and get used to using Kid3, I'll be on my way.

Thanks, but I'm hoping to find a simple and free Linux program to finally sort everything. I think Kid3, once I fully get to grips with it, will replace Puddletag. Just need a .jpeg coversion tool now.

Thankfully, I've never had an 'i' anything so not got that to worry about. But this whole tagging thing is a bugger until getting something that works across all platforms. If I was just using a phone for music then I'd be fine, but things can get complicated when using different DAPS ( see above regarding the Sony).

How you liking the Astell & Kern DAP ? Hopefully it's opened up next level detail for you, compared to a phone.

It’s bloody amazing. I’ve got the SE200. The sound quality is off the charts.

I’d coveted one for ages, but the eye-watering price always seemed hard to justify.

But then I managed to get one in a Black Friday deal for £1175, instead of the RRP of £1800. I mean, that’s still a serious amount of moolah, but in a world where a new iPhone 12 is £800+, it seemed more justifiable as a once-in-a-lifetime treat.

Blimey! Even by A&K prices, that is a serious wedge!

If it's a one off, and you have the money, then why not. Good stuff!

You do realise you have to spend a fortune on headphones now though to justify the A&K purchase
