Since we lost to Arsenal at the end of last year, most teams in the bottom half have played 4 times. Newcastle have played 6. In that time Arsenal have shot up the league and are not in the bottom half anymore. Here's how the other 9 have got on.

Wolves 0.5 points per game
Leeds 0.75 ppg
Palace 1 ppg
Newcastle 0.167 ppg
Burnley 1.5ppg
Brighton 1.25ppg
Fulham 0.5ppg
WBA 0.75ppg
Sheff Utd 1.5ppg

Should January's points return continue for the remaining games (obviously it won't, the game sample is very small and isn't adjusted for the quality of the opposition played) this would be the final table. We would reach the 40 point mark:

12 Burnley 50.5
13 Palace 41
14 Brighton 40.5
15 Leeds 39.5
16 Sheff Utd 35
17 Wolves 32
18 WBA 24.5
19 Fulham 22.5
20 Newcastle 22

I just thought it was worth mentioning given all of the self flagellating messages following last night's result when, like Spurs, Southampton & Liverpool in the last couple of months, we failed to beat, but didn't lose to Fulham. As we all know, it's a marathon, not a sprint and over the last month, although we've not changed our position in the race, we have closed the gap on a few in front of us and got further away from some behind.

Seeing as we have the most draws in the PL so far this season I can see us just drawing our way to safety.

The big question for me is "How many more points will Fulham get this season?"

Subtract 4 from that answer and that becomes our target.

Worst case is Fulham get 24 more points ( very unlikely ) meaning we need 20 more.

Still do-able.

Also I believe we have won a premier league game in January for the first time in our history (citation needed)

It's unusual for this to happen ...... but I can see it as well

its fair that it hasnt been terrible. unless that leads to Potter staying, return to previous form and no further wins (glass empty). hopefully its turn around we needed and results continue (glass full).

Also I believe we have won a premier league game in January for the first time in our history (citation needed)

True story.

17/18 - four games, two points
18/19 - four games, one point
19/20 - four games, two points
20/21 - four games, five points (and one game left)

A win would break the all time Brighton top division record of seven points, but with worse ppg obviously (unless you had the two points for win system back then?)

79/80 - three games, four points
80/81 - three games, zero points
81/82 - three games, seven points
82/83 - four games, two points

Newcastle's drop in results since the turn of the year is reminiscent of the 2019 fall that cost Chris Hughton his job. They were getting points at the beginning of the season, but with an Xg of just over 1, same as we were. Like us that year, they were sitting in mid table when the goals dried up. The Xg didn't change significantly for us, it's just that we stopped out performing it. Their pattern looks the same. This week's goal against Leeds was only their second in seven league games. Both goals came in defeats. They have a long time to turn it around and do have some creative players returning who could see them return to over performing the Xg, but walking that tightrope is bound to lead to a fall eventually and seems the reason why Tony Bloom decided to change things. All he needs now is for his team to somehow stop under performing the Xg Points by double figures.

Current form table also shows that, despite the injury absences and the disappointment of not getting the win last night, we are currently gaining more points per game than most of the bottom half. Only Burnley and Leeds have bettered our return from the last six matches. https://footystats.org/england/premier-league/form-table

And, despite the media's favourite monkey on our back about not winning at home, there are amazingly three teams below us in this season's home table: https://footystats.org/england/premier-league/home-away-league-table

Doing this without Lamptey, Welbeck & Lallana is certainly very impressive. Once those 3 are back firing on all cylinders next month, I think the wins will come more often than not.

Three points for a win was first introduced for the 1981-82 season.

Could you update this to take account for the full month now please?
