The EU sat back, still haven’t approved the vaccine, yet are now squealing it’s not fair.

To us it’s about the only benefit of brexit so far and the only truly good thing our government has done since the start of this.

Sorry EU but up yours Delors.

Coronavirus: EU demands UK-made AstraZeneca vaccine doses

The EU seem to be trying to make up for their delay in placing their vaccine order by trying some strong arm tactics on AstraZeneca. A supply logistics expert on Sky News just now was saying the UK’s early placement of its vaccine order enabled early investment by the company in production infrastructure in the UK.

Yeah but Boris is getting absolutely no credit for being ahead of Europe in this as far as I can see

I was a remainer but we seem to have benefited big time on not having to discuss this with other countries ad nauseum before it was approved. A big PLUS from Brexit

No, not having that. Brexit had zero impact on us being able to order a load of vaccines, despite the 8 likes on this comment. More fake news. Still waiting for Brexit benefits.

I understand that the government could, in extremis, ban the export of the vaccine to the EU anyway. However the refreshing attitude from the AstraZeneca CEO renders that step very unlikely.

Aren't we all glad that we are no longer part of the shambolic and incompetent EU?

No, and I suspect this is only the beginning of a serious deterioration in our relationship with the EU.

I’m not sure there would be any need for this. As Boris is making clear in the press conference, we are not involved. AstraZeneca are pretty clear they do not have a legal obligation to supply the EU with a particular number of doses so there really is not much they can do.

So had we gone in with the EU on the vaccine orders as many remainers on here and elsewhere argued at the time, you would have been satisfied?

It's nothing to do with Brexit but as pointed out the uk government approved the vaccine and placed early orders whereas the EU did not. Now they are trying underhand tactics to obtain supply.

I think the point is that if we were still in the EU we would be subject to their vaccination procurement, approval and distribution strategy ie membership had everything to do with our ability to sign contracts in a timely manner. The EU hasn’t actually approved use of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine as yet, although it is apparently imminent.

Not sure about that - the EU Commission negotiated the vaccine deal with Astrazeneca on behalf of all its member states, and managed to get a cheaper deal. But as it turns out, this has also now come at a cost.

The UK would not have been able to cut its own deal if we were still tied to the EU.

Brighton factually.....
The EU can......

Feck off.

Two years ago sat in a St Pauli Bar in Hamburg, several left wing socialists who obviously support them started chatting.
“Your crazy leaving the EU”
“ Your turning into a fascist country”

Yeah, Yeah, so your all socialists yeah ?

“Yes, of course we are”

Ok, why are you happy then to be ruled, dictated too by faceless bureaucrats that you did not vote for ?

“Well no”

Thought so, not such a bad idea then is it....

We chatted and laughed about football and politics all afternoon and. into the evening before I headed off to a psychobilly gig.
It was never about the people for me, I love Europe....

Having said that I still voted remain

Nah, thought

Well yes, as we would have both - as some EU countries have, such as Hungary I believe.

Please do correct me if I'm wrong though.

I am in no position to correct you as I do not know. My question was genuine though, and not intended to be hostile as I would wish that at some point for pressure to dissipate between leavers and remainers.

Not fake news Notters.

You realise that the EU haven't actually approved the Astrazeneca Vaccine yet? Allegedly they will 'at the end of January...'

The vaccine that has (in part) led to 6 million + vaccinations taking place in the UK

Like it or not, the UK Govt got this right (amongst not much else with the exception of furlough) by getting in early on the ordering of vaccines. They have also ordered millions of other vaccines still not yet approved.

The EU has f***ed this up big time and is now throwing their toys out - try speaking as I do every day to Dutch, Belgians, French, Italians and Germans - they cannot believe how incompetent the EU policy has been on Vaccines.

Why ??? because some people will protect their beloved EU over anything.........we saw it enough in the Brexit threads.

This may be true and there is also a counterbalance for that regarding the entrenchment of leavers.

But at some point we all have to accept that whatever our position was on the referendum vote, we are now ALL in this together, there is no leaver or remainer, only a nation that was once in the EU.

I think you may be wrong. Hungary has circumvented the EU strategy by ordering from Russia and the UK but without approval from the EU. The ability to ignore the will of the 27 member states and the commission is hardly a strong argument for membership. If all states did that there wouldn’t be much point to the organization.
