the silly thing with this view of the data is the difference between one dose and two dose is about 5%-10% efficacy. 17 million vaccinated to 85% efficacy compared to say France with about 1 million "fully" vaccinated to 95% efficacy. which would you honestly prefer if you looked at that objectively? 17m safe from severe covid and hospitalisation, or only 1m. if anyone prefers the latter, i'd like to hear why.

Germany’s desperate campaign to improve Covid vaccine take-up has stalled after Angela Merkel refused to ditch her country’s anti-scientific policy of refusing the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine for over-65s, saying in an interview she will not take it as she is 66. This month Merkel expressed that the vaccine campaign slow start had been a “disappointment” and Germany needs to be smart to avoid a third wave…

Merkel today told the Frankfurter Allgemeine:

“Do you understand people who do not want to be vaccinated with this remedy?”

“Astra-Zeneca is a reliable vaccine, effective and safe, approved by the European Medicine Agency and recommended in Germany up to the age of 65. All authorities tell us that this vaccine can be trusted. As long as the vaccines are as scarce as they are at present, you cannot choose what you want to vaccinate with.”

“Shouldn’t you lead by example and be vaccinated in the face of this acceptance problem?”

“I am 66 years old and do not belong to the group recommended for Astra-Zeneca.”

Still, things could be worse: today the French Health Ministry announced they are to launch a campaign to improve the “image” of the Oxford vaccine. Perhaps start by forcing Macron to publicly eat his words…

I did say that I would leave this thread alone but feel the need to comment on this as it's even worse in Spain where the the government has refused to sanction use of the Oxford/AstraZenica vaccine for over 55 year olds. Needless to say the shortage of Pfizer product means that they have only just started vaccinating the over 80's this week. Although problems have arisen there as all Malaga City vaccinations for over 80's had to be cancelled this week - why? You guessed it - no vaccines! The rate it's going here means my daughter at 47 and living in Suffolk will be vaccinated before her 75 year old father living in Spain.

I don't know where the Italian government stand on these vaccines, however my 85 year old uncle still hasn't been vaccinated.

Germany is likely to change course on its recommendation not to give the AstraZeneca vaccine to over 65s, saying errors had been made

German scientists have urged Berlin to speed up vaccinations by following the UK’s example in delaying the second dose as German regulators look set to make a U-turn by approving the AstraZeneca jab for over 65s.

A team of pandemic researchers believe delaying the second dose of the BioNTech-Pfizer and Moderna vaccines beyond the current 28 days would speed up the process, provide greater protection for the population and result in “up to 10,000 or 15,000 fewer deaths” in Germany.

The authors of the study, prepared by a team of pandemic researchers from Berlin’s Humbolt University and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, say delaying the second dose would also prevent vaccine mutations from continuing to gain traction.

Berlin-based pandemic researcher Dirk Brockmann told Germany’s Deutsche Welle news service on Sunday that a change in strategy would boost the country’s lagging vaccination rollout.

Delaying the second dose would double the speed of ongoing vaccinations as “you no longer just put the second dose back in the fridge and wait."

“According to that data, there is complete protection against death from Covid in the risk groups after the first dose. That's a huge success,” said Prof Brockmann.

The French government says older people with pre-existing conditions can now get the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. "People affected by co-morbidities can be vaccinated with AstraZeneca, including those aged between 65 and 74," the health minister Olivier Véran said. Last month France approved use of the vaccine for under-65s only - citing lack of data for older people. Since then studies have shown the jab is highly effective among the elderly. The Oxford jab is used across the UK, but several EU countries are limiting it to under-65s - including Germany.

This episode could be Macron's WMD moment.

Hundreds, possibly thousands of elderly French people will have died / will die because of what he said (which let's remember wasn't based on any scientific evidence and was purely political)

Austria and Denmark have become the latest EU countries to break away from Brussels' vaccines strategy, raising fears that the bloc's unity in the face of the coronavirus pandemic was crumbling.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Monday night said that Austria would work with Israel and Denmark on second generation coronavirus vaccines and “no longer rely on the EU in the future”.

It is widely seen as a rebuke to the European Commission-led joint procurement scheme for vaccines, which has lagged far behind the UK, Israel and US, and involved negotiating for supplies as a bloc.
