I'm afraid that this joke is flawed as Liverpool's first team (I assume the hound is only really concerned about the first team's result) did pull off a 1-4 away victory against Aston Villa on the 8th January 21. Although Villa were forced to field a youth team for the match, due to the regular first team squad being rendered unavailable due to a a Covid-19 outbreak, it still counts as a first class victory in a major competition.

The joke needs to be re-worded. Perhaps pertaining to premier league fixtures only?

A man is out walking his dog when the Liverpool score comes in, 1-0 to Burnley. The dog bares it's teeth, growls and goes into a frenzied rage.
A passer-by sees this and asks, "Blimey! What did it do when Liverpool pulled off a 1-4 away victory against Aston Villa on the 8th January 21? Although Villa were forced to field a youth team for the match, due to the regular first team squad being rendered unavailable due to a a Covid-19 outbreak, it still counts as a first class victory in a major competition."
"I don't know," replied the man. "I've only had it since January 9th."

I think you're right. It works better like this.

But where dos the score come in from if the man's out walking?

Perhaps he has a modern transistor radio or something else that might provide this type of information?
