Showing my ignorance, I didn't think you could score direct from a goalkick. Or is that being offside that I'm thinking of?

You are correct, a player cannot be offside when they receive the ball directly from a goal kick, no matter what position they are on the pitch.

Bloody hell, when I read it I assumed it was a drop kick. Incredible to do that from a dead ball situation, must have been pretty windy!

Nor me. Goal kicks are indirect aren't they? Unless anyone else has touched the ball that should be a goal kick to the other lot shouldn't it?

Yep you can score a goal - but not an own goal.

Blimey you are correct...

A goal may be scored directly from a goal kick, but only against the opposing team; if the ball directly enters the kicker’s goal a corner kick is awarded to the opponents if the ball left the penalty area.
