Seems to have become a big thing on here but it’s not as bad as being made out.

We’ve conceded 6 from set pieces this season from 15 games which is the same as Man United, Wolves and Spurs. It’s only 1 more than Liverpool and Chelsea.

Last season we conceded just 10 from set pieces from the 38 games, fewer than Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal.

There is nothing wrong with zonal marking or Potter’s ability to coach or set up a team to defend or whatever lazy criticism the anti Potter brigade want to use to throw at him.

We much worse at defending set pieces in our first season in the Premier League under Hughton where we conceded the highest number of set piece goals in the division by a long way - 21. And that was with Dunk and Duffy at the back before anyone comes back with some nonsense about them being the answer now.

Yes we can obviously improve at them but set pieces aren’t the reason we’re only in 16th. The glaring issues are that we are absolutely not clinical enough in front of goal and players like Dunk, White and Ryan are making too many individual mistakes they shouldn’t be making.

As MOTD pointed out we are the second worse in the division for goals conceded from crosses and set pieces behind Leeds. This is definitely a problem area for us and one we need to address.

For all the height we have our defenders are more comfortable with the ball at their feet than in the air and our marking is hopeless at times.

Yes we have missed chances and that also needs work (the fact we have issues in both boxes at the moment is why we are not winning games) but we cannot ignore we have a weakness in this area and teams are clearing working to exploit it.

I thought it was eight conceded and two scored, it is not the be all and end all if we are doing well in other areas. Leicester have not scored from a set piece and Chelsea and Everton have conceded the same number. The problem is that we are weaker in other areas so we need to be better at set pieces. We are not that far from being a mid table team, goers like yesterday are conceded regularly, it is costing us points. The responsibility must be the managers. I think we have a mid table squad, the stats in most areas are good, we are not getting the points. Potter needs to get a bit more fight into the team.

We do seem to get a lot of corners, perhaps Potter and the team need to study videos of Pulis’s Stoke team who were deadly at corners (and throw ins).

Hopefully we’re not to proud to copy something that worked effectively.

It's not just defending set pieces thats the problem, it's attacking them as well. We literally never score directly from a corner and its ridiculous considering the height that we have in the side.

We are quite easy on the eye, quite good at everything, but brilliant at nothing, and effective, overall, only just sufficiently to keep us out of the bottom three. There is no mystery.

Well, we do have a Peter Crouch in BDB.

Common Sense Alert!

It's not just how many you conceded. It's when and in which games.

Hughton’s last season we improved significantly, as he reacted accordingly. Knockaert picking up a post for example. Somebody in another thread mentioned that Dunk and Duffy were effectively free to attack the ball, which also helped.

Goals from corners might be more interesting, as presumably set pieces include direct from free-kicks? (Presumably taken from whoscored.com)

There is a lot wrong with pure zonal marking IMO, and we look disorganised as Everton, Utd and West Ham have shown. Last season we also had Duffy in some games, which helped though that is hypothetical.

It should be about learning and adapting so hopefully GP and his staff will resolve.

So what has a player’s height got to do with it?

We can spend a load of time nitpicking over semantics or stay with the point which is that our delivery in to the box directly from corners and set pieces in general is poor as is the ability of our players to get on the end of them. Wouldn't you agree?

Don't agree with you

The evidence of my eyes suggests to me that we're bad at defending set pieces

It was particularly bad at the beginning of the season, but since the Everton game I count only 3 goals in 11 games: Villa, Saints and West Ham. Have I missed any? If not then it’s not been that bad of late, has it?

If I'm not mistaken Dunks goal on Sunday was the first time we scored with the new two man corner routine

Yeah but also playing it short the way that we did has worked brilliantly for us before, gave us Dunk's equaliser vs Arsenal last season. Can't understand why we don't do that more often, usually when we play it short it's tapped to a player stood towards the edge of the 18 yard box (as opposed to the goal line like against Arsenal and on Sunday) who'll then try to cross it and then it comes to nothing and is extremely infuriating. Playing it short, but incisively, to a runner who then continues on into the box seems to work great.

well one would certainly hope not ....!! a mate of mine who usually wins our dream team tipping comp has confessed in a sniff laden bender that he simply looks at the comp leaders board for ideas of who to put in his team , you would have to be a mug to not look around for ways to be better at whatever it is you are doing.
