[Technology] New TV'S and HDMI connectors

My TV has just been written off by Currys repair service, I know have a voucher for a new one,
I know what size I want and am torn between LG and Samsung.

Most TV's now only have 2 HDMI connections I need 3 ( minimum) one for Sky One for Firestick and one for surround sound system.
I would like a 4th for DVD but thats hardly used now.

Anyone know how good the 3 to 1 HDMI connectors are ? and are they auto switching or manual?

Can't you use the dvd into the sky out to tv. I know you used to be able to.

Not an expert on HDMI splitters, can't you use the recommended optical output for the sound?

My experience of these has been appalling, I bought a splitter with Remote control as I still run dvd/Blu-ray/ Virgin Media & Now Tv, had terrible trouble remote control wouldn’t work, in the end like u I guess I just unplugged and plugged.

Would love a solution myself

The optical goes direct from TV to Sky ...

No.......The bose system uses HDMI

So one for Sky
One for Bose
One for DVD
One for Firestick.

I have one to switch between work laptop and home desktop connection into my monitor and have found it very temperamental indeed, to the point where I have taken it out and just swap the cable over now. I would find that it would sometimes not recognise the desktop PC, and which ever way the switch was set it would show the laptop screen. Other times I would be using the desktop and it would randomly decide to switch over. Mine was a pretty cheap one off amazon but, reading the reveiws, it seems to be a fairly common problem with all of them. When it worked it was great, and it may be that it works much better with a TV than with computers

Optical cable from tv directly connected to sound bar should play all sound from TV & sources connected to TV.

Not sure what TVs you have been looking at, but most of the LG ones that are not at the bottom end of their ranges have 4x HDMI - as an example https://www.richersounds.com/tv-projectors/all-tvs/lg-49nano866na.html but most seem to have that number?

Not really cost effective as I own all the DVDs, but I rarely use DVD's now

Its not a sound bar is a Bose lifestyle system that Ive had a while, it does not have that option,

Exactly what I thought. Pretty sure most TVs have at least 3 HDMI inputs!? I know my last three TVs have had 4. I think even my 2007 Samsung had 3 for crying out loud!

Exactly my 2014 Samsung had 4 so why do newer TV's only have 2?

Anyway gone for LG now with 3

You will probably need to consider whether you need 4KUHD/HDR capabilities, too. I bought one of these: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07RY7Y9PR/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_Y9vWFb5E6SMXR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 because the sound box I had used as a feed through to the TV for my Xbox and Virgin media V6 box wouldn't feed through the signal (xbox wouldn't HDR or 4K on disney+, V6 wouldn't play any on demand content)

FreeSat, Fire Stick, DVD, and laptop

if youve got a surround system would you not consider getting a receiver . MY receiver will kick out better sound to the speakers and has 4 hdmi that just goes into 1 on the tv. More expense obviously.

Thanks for your link chap - I just bought that too, picking it up tomorrow. I've been in the market for a while, and have been hovering over a Sony Bravia 65" for £729. But that seemed a mite excessive sizewise for my living room. The spec on that LG is very close, and the 60" screen will fit better. £450, happy days.

Only thing is, going from HD to 4k I guess I'll have to upgrade to Sky Q, which is an extra £7 a month. But it will deliver Multiroom into the deal, which will make my son and the doris happy.
