Get your point boys but didn't they come out at the same time as punk in 76/77 when there was no Mod movement at that time?

There was a documentary on Weller and the Jam on Sky Arts recently. Within he confirms he steered the jam as a Mod Revival Group.

Always found the second time around Mod movement a bit sad. Why couldn't they have thought of something new?

THere's no doubt the Jam were highest profile, and arguably led the way, but as Sam says, the Mods Mayday album shows there were plenty of other RnB bands about who were similarly inclined stylewise. To a lesser extent it never completely went away, just went underground, mod to boot boy, skinheads to suedheads and a soul and scootering fraternity, particularly in the north of England. . the mod revival died by 83, scooterists kept scootering as a virtually mod free subculture through the 80's, it wasn't until the mid 90's they became popular again fuelled by britpop . . . What most people consider 'mod' these days is laughable, but thats another story.

I agree to a point, although his more recent interviews in magazines (or even the Style Council documentary) he seemed a bit miffed with Red Wedge being hijacked by contemporary leftie politicians with only self-interest at heart.

Also as Mods Mayday shows, whilst the Mod revival became massive - no Mod band came close to kissing Weller's socks. The 2-tone and new Wave acts also helped spread the Mod look, but the Merton Parkers, Secret Affair, Nine Bellow Zero and the rest were all pretty naff.

Most socialists can't stand shallow careerist politicians. He was disillusioned the Labour Party not with his belief in Socialism. And with anyone with a political conviction, his faith and active support has fluctuated over the last 40 years.

I could never understand how he got the title Modfather, as he is a second generation mod. If anyone deserves the title it’s probably someone like Pete Townsend
