If we're gonna do it, do it now before furlough ends.

(stick this in the COVID folder if you want - apologies)

Seems sensible - if it's deemed a step worth taking. Can't see infection rates falling. If we want to stop them there needs to be a bit of a shock to the system.

Would be great if the government could look ahead and anticipate when we might need another circuit break e.g. end of December, and then we and businesses etc could plan for it.

 So rinse repeat ‘circuit breaker’ lockdowns then, what happens when they release restrictions?

Remember what happened the last time we had a ‘3 week lockdown’ It’s time to say no. Pretty much everyone else in Europe is doing everything they can to avoid any lockdown, yet some people in high places in this country appear to be desperate for one? Why?

<Probably a thread for the COVID section BTW>

I think yes, for the reasons already mentioned above (furlough / half-term) but also because if we allow things to get much worse, and even with the latest round of restrictions I think there's a reasonable chance of that happening, Christmas will be an absolute disaster. Imagine we go into that period north of where we were in March in terms of virus prevalence and then instead of having a full-on lockdown as we did then, we have a nationwide family get together - it has 'carnage' written all over it.

If we knew that they could sort out the track and trace systems in two weeks then absolutely. But realistically we know they can't do that.

the "circuit breaker" didnt work back in the spring, and that was how many weeks?

see Starmer has jumped on this, in favour of full lock down. meanwhile Labour mayors in Liverpool and Manchester complain about last orders at 10pm and bars shutting

To be fair, those complaints are about everyone being on the streets at 10pm together and how it's impossible to enforce social distancing. If the bars didn't open at all then that wouldn't happen...

You have to love captain hindsight and his merry men.
I wonder when Ashworth's balls are going to drop.

Problem is that most were scared shitless when Covid first hit, now plenty seem willing to risk themselves and others, so a Lockdown will be nowhere near as effective next time.

Yep. Most people still think the risk is about catching it and not about spreading it.

Those that strut around saying they are not worried about it really don't understand how viruses spread nor the knock on effects.

We need to somehow tell them that it's not about preventing them from ending up in hospital but ensuring that the 30-year old mother can get early vital breast cancer treatment.

And the reason it ‘didn’t work’ back in Spring can’t possibly be in part because the government didn’t implement mass testing and tracing... :moo:
