Breaking news that he has succumbed to throat cancer. A true innovator up there with other players like Hendrix. The man who brought tapping and the classic brown sound overdriven guitar tone to the masses. Even if his iconic Eruption solo on Van Halen's first album passed you by many will recall his stunning solo on Michael Jackson's hit Beat It.

Hugely influential guitar player and I say not being particular into his music.

Probably next to Hendrix in terms of influence.

An incalculable loss to the world of rock. In 1978 he blew open the doors to a new way of playing the guitar that influenced generations of players. Absolutely gutted. A true rock and roll legend.

I don't know if i'm remembering correctly, but wasn't Eruption used as part of Alan "Fluff" Freeman's Radio 1 Rock Show intro?
I first got into Van Halen when Sammy Hagar was the singer, DLR had gone by the time i was really getting into rock music in the mid eighties.

It’s a cliche, but legend and genius are often banded about these days but this guy was both. He’s left a wide, deep and far reaching legacy as well as some truly brilliant music. RIP Eddie.
