[Albion] January Transfer Window

Historically we have said we don't like the transfer window and generally don't buy anyone significant.

However I wonder if part of our strategy is to wait until then. By then we may have a clearer idea of where football and finances sit, we may start to see crowds coming back and equally some clubs may be struggling even more financially.

We know Tony doesn't like to overpay for anyone and it might be a better time to buy a striker then?

As we are clearly not going to buy a striker today lets look ahead to January :)

Villa were a shambles and had a very poor transfer window last season. They have made some great business now but also off-loaded a few. We also won't pay the wages Villa will.

The club doesn't seem to have a clue when it comes to strengthening our attacking options. Two small strikers is NOT enough for any club let alone one allegedly with aspirations to become a top 10 side.

Fromm a financial perspective - transfer fee + wages, we just cant compete with Villa.

A for that reason from a quality perspective, everyone around us, bar Burnley and WBA, has added plenty of potential quality.

You stand still, the others will catch you and pass you

Yet we have scored 14 goals in the last 7 competitive games.

This is part of the issue. I am pretty sure that when Bloom/Barber said this it was aspirational. Over several years. It certainly wasn't a prediction for this season. A slow sustainable build over the coming years, not a rash buy a lot and pay a lot for a quick, but short term fix.

It was also said before COVID turned football finance upside down.

Understandably it may have been kicked a little further down the road for now.

Extremely unlikely to see crowds back by then. Maybe we will buy a striker in January but it will depend, as ever, on money and if the right sort of player becomes available. i.e, taller, mobile, goal scorer. As we all know those are like gold dust for the Premier League. Its been a mixed window. Quiet on first team in-comings but the club continue to invest wisely in its strategy of building a young and talented squad for the future. That's got to be a sensible and sustainable model for a club with our finances.

We might say we don't like it but we've bought Ulloa, Knockaert, Locadia, Mac Allister, Mooy and Lamptey all in January, I would say they've all been significant signings one way or another. If the right player is available for the right money, and they're the key points, then we will of course be prepared to buy then.
