First presidential debate between Trump and Biden

Date: Tuesday, Sept. 29
Moderator: Chris Wallace, anchor at Fox News Sunday
Location: Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio
Time: 9:00 p.m-10:30 p.m. EDT, without commercial breaks
Format: There will be six segments of approximately 15 minutes each on major topics. Wallace will open each segment with a question, and Trump and Biden will each have two minutes to respond. After that, Trump and Biden can respond to each other, while Wallace will balance time between the two for the remaining discussion time about the topic.

Six planned topics for the debate, chosen by Wallace, were revealed on Tuesday. The topics are subject to change and will not necessarily be brought up in the following order: the Trump and Biden records, the Supreme Court, COVID-19, the economy, race and violence in American cities, and the integrity of the election.

So what do we see happening here?

Will the moderators this year pull a The Complete And Utter Shyster and try and take the spotlight for themselves with constant endless fact checking against the candidates?
Will Biden perform better than he did against Sanders, where he was systematically torn apart on his record?
Will Trump be able to go more than 5 minutes without saying something hopelessly stupid?
Will either of them be able to form a coherent sentence?
Is there really any point when the Trumpsters will just say he's the best regardless of his performance tonight?
Is there really any point when the Biden voters will just say he's the best regardless of his performance tonight?
How many references to Nazi Germany will Biden make?
How many references to Communism will Trump make?
Over/Under on how many times Russia and/or China will be blamed for something?

All of this AND MORE! (this is going to be depressing)

Willing to bet that Trump spends much more time talking about how things would be under Biden than how things have been under himself.

There'll be rioting if Biden gets in!
- there's rioting now!
Fake news!

Biden got a job for his boy in Ukraine.
- Your entire family are on the payroll!
Fake News!

The economy will tank under Biden!
- It tanked under you
Fake News!

Lot's of people will die of Covid under Biden!
- They are dying now
Fake News!

Biden is part of the corrupt Swamp!
- You don't pay tax.
Fake News!

... 90 mins of this. :ffsparr:

Would be 100 if Chris Kavanagh was hosting.

I really can't see that many people in the UK staying up until 2 am when this starts for them and watching for 90 minutes - I think most will choose a good nights sleep and watch recorded highlights (or more likely lowlights)

That it has come to these two slugging it out is very depressing

This wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. I'd like to see at the very least a real time fact checking score box next to each candidate. Every time they say a verifiable lie their score goes up by one. Then before they wrap up the modifier can tell both candidates how many outright lies they've told and how many unverified 'facts' they've claimed.

Let the world see which one lies the most and tell it to their face.

I am worried about this. I can see Biden forgetting his words and coming across as a senile old man and the big orange baby slaughterng him with his populist ranting.

Looking forward to the highlights. Will he lurk about stage again? Bound to mention medication.

The final debate is three blocks from our home. It’s going to be a madhouse here that week.

My thoughts too. 'Constant endless fact checking' would be very welcome in the face of 'constant endless lies'
But won't happen.

I suspect it will be a fairly dull affair, lot's of heat, very little light and unless something really extreme happens it will just reinforce everyone's existing opinions. Everyone already knows what they are getting with Trump and I don't think many people are voting for Biden because they think he's some kind of inspiring orator or super-sharp political analyst. Biden will play safe. Trump will spout sh*t. the polls won't change.
