Apologies for my ignorance about how many subs you're allowed, which of our u23's are out on loan and whether any members of the starting XI are having to isolate.

My criteria for selection is simple. All 11 who started yesterday are out of the squad. (Gross and Veltman are likely to play on Sunday so will have no more than 45 to 60 mins each), but the rest of the team should go onto the pitch under no illusions that progression in the competition is expected.

Apart from the necessary wrapping in wool of some of our key players, let's go out and actually win the thing. I'll admit to being a bit irritated with our attitude to the cups last year, not so much selection which was well discussed, but more the lackadaisical pre season friendly attitude we had on the pitch. This is Pompey. They are filth. I do not want to give them any respite from their richly deserved misery

That was in a pretty exceptional set of circumstances, with a backlog of injuries and a pile up of first team fixtures. Sure we play again on Sunday, but I would expect most of last nights bench to get something of a run out

I like to think that they would make an attempt to progress in the cups. It does give a bit of a lift and a welcome sideshow to the annual tread.

I'll be honest, I don't care about the League Cup. We're not in Division 3 hoping for a tie against a big Division 1 club any more. We are a business that needs to remain a player in the Premier League, especially in these difficult times. I expect Potter to have his 18 in mind for Newcastle on Sunday, then build a competitive team to beat Pompey from that starting point. I would hope that shouldn't be beyond Potter as we have an awful lot of players to pick from.

for all those naming the names ...... take into consideration game is Thurs 17 and on Fri 18 both the U18's (11am) & U23's (7pm) play which is going to stretch the squads a little thin maybe some players will be in more than one match day squad for these fixtures
