Yes, I just hope it isn’t a recurring theme. That was the first time we lost to a lower league team in the FA Cup at home in something like 15 years.

If other clubs don’t take the League Cup as seriously, then it should be easier for us! That’s how Villa got to the final. That would be a big thing for us considering where we’ve come from. I think these things make the club better, even if it isn’t as important as the FA Cup.

The U23s are playing Arsenal the following night (the 18th), whilst the U18s head to Fulham on the 19th.

Obviously every age group could potentially step up a level, but I'm not sure we'll see a last season vs Villa type level of rotation unless either of those games are moved.

EFL trophy is the League 1 and 2 teams plus 16 U23 teams.

Anyone actually watching this tomorrow?

Anyone want us to go through? We have the Preston glamour tie to look forward to if we do. Very good chance of getting to within a game of a League Cup quarter final which has alluded us since 1978/79.

It's a very winnable couple of ties, allied with the insane fixture congestion for the top 6 sides + Arsenal in Europe and it represents an outstanding opportunity for someone of our ilk to go very deep and even possibly win it. I'd be pretty unhappy if we treat the competition with the same contempt we did last season.

How much of a distraction is it?? Winning breeds confidence and momentum, it's the next 3 midweeks and then we won't play midweek for a good while with European competition kicking in. I'm not saying we should put out a full 11 but we should be mixing first team with some fringe players and putting out teams strong enough to win these games and who knows where it might take us.

prefer we win obvs but really dont care too much about the match tbh, losing against Chelsea previously or Newcastle next in the PL will get the usual emotional roller coaster response.

It’s not a Micky Mouse cup, it’s better than anything we’ve ever won in over 100 years.

Cup games are normally more exciting than the league games as it’s a must win, especially if you don’t want the embarrassment of losing to a lower league team or rivals, which is why beating Palace in the FA Cup was by far one of the best nights I’ve had at The Amex.

If you lose, that’s it, another year of knowing we aren’t going to play at Wembley. Lose a PL game and you know we could still lose about 14 more and still stay up. Losses don’t effect me too much in the PL, we are pretty much expected to lose. We only need to win about 10 games and we achieve our goal.

Playing in the cups is where the potential glory is, not just staying in PL.

Looks like Potter is going to put a decent team out, so not exactly fringe players. Potter knows we can go far. We’ve got the draw for the 4th Round after our game, so it could potentially be a relatively easy route to the quarter finals. I’ve never seen us in the quarter finals, but I would love to and I really don’t think it would hinder us in the league. We’ve got the squad depth to beat lower league teams.

This season should have been the season to ditch the league Cup under the pretence of Covid and never bring it back.

It begs the question, none of us support Albion for the glory but surely we want success?? So for a club of our stature what represents success?? Realistically we can never win the league so surely the two domestic trophies, now we are a fairly established PL club are our best route to success?? Or is it just survival every season at this level?

Personally would absolutely love us to win a trophy and this one is the most realistic, and the European adventure that would follow.

Non-league sides don't enter the League Cup. Anyway, many people would love to have a good run in the League Cup - it offers teams outside the top 6 their best opportunity to win a trophy so in that respect anything but a waste of time.

i really don't understand the apathy and hate of the League cup. Agreed the financial importance to a prem league club is far less important than it is to League 1 and 2 clubs, however that doesn't detract from the whole "cup run" idea.

Given the fact that a club has just been wound up over a debt LESS than Gareth Bales WEEKLY wage shows how precarious the whole football pyramid is. The league cup could offer a lower league club a life line, its an opportunity to give game time to fringe players for Championship and Prem teams, and also whats not to like about a good cup run. Very few here would say "Meh, its only the league cup final, I cant be arsed going to Wembley" should we manage to get that far.

Football is about winning silverware. It’s our best chance. You could say it’s more difficult than the FA Cup as there’s more chance of getting a PL team earlier on.

We didn’t put our U23s out and that’s because we have the squad depth to do well in the cups now, like I said before.

I bloody enjoyed watching last night. Loads of chances and a team that really wanted to win.
