Has trump actually done badly as a president? I know he's a bit of a joke in this country but he can't be doing too badly if he's odds on to get elected again. I remember everybody saying first time round that if he got in he'd start world war three etc... but he hasn't as far as I'm aware.

Trump is not odds on to be re-elected. Biden is currently leading in the polls but of course that could change.

Call me old fashioned but I think advising people with Covid to inject themselves with disinfectant is a bad thing to do when you’re the President of the United States.

Good point, but is it not protocol for anyone from the ruling party not to stand against a sitting US President? (even if he is basically a Nazi)

It certainly would have been entertaining to watch the s*** storm that followed had someone put their head above the parapet.

Good point too. It leads to the horrifying prospect for Republicans who have a shred of decency left having to vote for Biden or not vote at all.

And yes, it would have been a shitstorm but at least things might have been properly discussed within the Republican party. Sometimes you have stand up and make a difference and call out the lies, bigotry and corruption. Sadly, there is a chap in a Russian hospital who probably won't make it who has bravely done this despite the risks.

Yes he has. His pandemic response has been horrendous. That should be enough to disqualify him as a good president. Damaged NATO, destroyed the Iran agreement, started trade war with China, messed up Korea negotiatons, drove Israel and Palestine further apart, seperated and locked up young children of immigrants, encouraged white supremacists and fueled hatred of minorities, sent the army on to the streets to tackle peaceful protestors, destroyed the environmental protection agency, ignored Russia offering bounties on American soldiers, increased financial inequality, impeded funding for disaster relief efforts in Puerto Rico and Calfornia wildfires. Theres more.

Biden is 8/11 to win the election. Trump 13/10.

Yes, he has been the worst president they've ever had.

If you measure success by how much of his platform he has got done, he has been awful. He had two years with a majority in the house and the senate and didn't build his wall, didn't reform or replace Obamacare, hasn't brought manufacturing back and has achieved nothing in foreign policy terms as he has made himself a lone isolationist voice in an internationalist world, opting out of international action, but replacing it with nothing. His tax reform has been a disaster and, with healthcare, was a major factor in the Republicans losing the house in 2018. His tariffs have hurt American manufacturing and farming. Unemployment is at record highs. They have the worst coronavirus figures in the world. He has been impeached. He has been named as an unindicted co-conspirator in at least one criminal trial. His only achievement has been to elect judges, something that is more down to McConnell's single minded approach, than to Trump. In fact, his pick for the supreme court made the job of the senate majority a lot more difficult than it should have been. Even in stacking the supreme court, he has still lost cases considered to be important for the Republican platform. His administration has haemorrhaged staff in unprecedented numbers and lots have publicly denounced his ability to do his job. There are several organisations of former republicans campaigning against him, not necessarily because of his policies, but because of his ability and fitness for office.

If you measure things on more neutral metrics, his performance has been even worse. The only way to proclaim his presidency a success is if you are a revolutionary anarchist or libertarian who would like to see the dismantling or failure of government, or if you are Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin.

He isn't odds on to be re-elected. He is significantly behind in all national polling and is in worse shape still in some of the swing state polling.

Current odds according to Oddschecker;

Biden - 8/11
Trump - 13/10

I think the TV debates will have a big influence. The floating voters will want to see that both men are mentally sharp enough to see out a 4-year term.

The Covid-19 lockdown will mean the campaign trail is less gruelling than usual, so less opportunity to show weakness. That really plays into Biden's hands as voters are used to seeing Trump mess up already, so that washes over them.

I know Trump is 3 years younger than Biden but the last 4 years of his presidency AND all of the legal wrangling, impeachment etc will have taken their toll on him.

Overall, I think Covid has been a game-changer for Trump and I fancy Biden will edge it.

What is the argument for re-electing Trump?

I think only those in his cult who want to deny reality for 4 more years. They have convinced themselves that the "Radical" Left are the Devil incarnate.

You’re probably a liberal/socialist. Typical response - “Oh, the people who don’t vote the right way are thick, so they shouldn’t be allowed to vote”. We had the same BS on here over Brexit and that those who voted to leave didn’t understand / racist / xenophobic / old, etc. The lefties can’t tolerate debate without getting personal (note the use of gammon in your post). The self-righteous, sanctimonious bile which socialists like to espouse continually alienates people.

****ing A. You couldn’t be further from the truth. You carry on with your very conscious bias.

Meanwhile I’ll just go back to thinking 90% of
Americans are morons and deserve everything they get politically.

People like you hate hearing the unpalatable truth, dismissing it as self-righteous, sanctimonious bile. I'll tell you what, if you don't like the reasoning, why don't YOU come up with the answer to your own question which was : Why did so many people vote for Trump?

This is a man born into vast wealth who has a track record for losing money hand over fist. So is he a man of business? Not really.
He has a proven track record for lying and gross misogyny, and he hates being questioned in press conferences. So much so, that he ignores reporters who asks him anything awkward. So it's not his moral compass either.

What he does do is shout loudly "America first" and "Make America great again" without doing anything of note except dismantling long standing policies for the longer term benefit in favour of crap short-term populism. So he goes to trade war with China over steel to save American jobs. Good luck with that as US steel continues to be uncompetitive after he's burnt bridges with China over trade policy. He has favoured Israel (moving the embassy to Jerusalem before a settlement is reached), which has damaged the US as a bastion of any sort of neutrality. He has pulled out of Iranian nuclear and international save the planet agreements all to protect his place in the short term at the expense of a better world or a better America in the longer term. He refused to acknowledge the problems created by no notable state healthcare (trying his best to pull the plug on Obamacare) or lack of gun control, he tacitly allows ugly racist groups to carry on. It is endless.

But the intelligensia saw him for what he was, and so did the liberals - so coupled with a friendly Fox media, masses of ignorant morons voted for him purely because he was a fat old white crusty and wasn't liberal Hilary, who don't forget *gasp* sent an email from a personal account.

You don't have to be a liberal to see what happened here, you just have to engage your brain. Your whining at liberals and socialists is pathetic. Until you can provide a better answer as to why Trump was voted in, I suggest you STFU.

If you’d read my first post on page 1, I already stated I’m not a fan of Trump. I did suggest why I thought he’d won, as so many ‘normal’ people people are disillusioned with politics and politicians. They lie and promise us the earth when they need our votes, then go back to sticking their snouts in the trough for another 4-5 years.

My issue was the fact that the liberals/progressives (as they like to view themselves) throw terms around like racist/gammon/thicko/selfish/greedy for those who have the audacity to have a different opinion.

The greatest problem in politics is the confrontation which goes on, and idiots who want to make themselves feel superior by using such derogatory terms as gammon to attack those who have a different view is never going to achieve anything.

Also, making pathetic statements about a country of 380m and saying that they are mainly stupid is clearly just sanctimonious, self-important tripe. If reflects on the person making those statements and their own inadequacies.

Biden is a perfectly fine choice. He's likeable, he's empathetic, he's folksy and in touch with the white working class in a way many Democrats are not, he has a compelling personal back story, he's popular in the African American community and he's not of the far left. The youth and the left are not excited but they've made their peace with him in a way they didn't with Hilary. In a 'get Trump out' election they couldn't do much better.

Here's Joe displaying that empathy you apparently think he has. It's his passionate speech about why they should pass the 94 crime bill so they can build more jails around the country to jail these black predators. Empathy? You're having a laugh.

Biden has been in a position of power for 40 years and he's part of the reason why things are like they are in the US.

In the end its the same old story. The oligarchs of the US - the bank owners - have already decided who gets elected, as they did with the latest 20 or so presidents. They make the decisions, their executers (the secret services) carry it out through their PR division (the media) who then with proven propaganda methods tell the people who to vote for. If the banks want Trump elected, he will get elected. If the banks wants Biden elected, he will get elected. Its the greatest show on earth.

Shame George Carlin is dead because we need him more than ever now. A lot of wisdom wrapped up in laugh out loud humour
