Teddy Maybank's contract cost £238,000 (Nov 77). That may have been the highest before Ritchie.

Yep, Lawrenson was £100k and we outbid Liverpool both in transfer fee and salary terms.

My memory may be playing tricks here but I thought he was deliberately bought for £99,000 so he didn't have the pressure of being a £100k player. But that's only a vague memory

According to Tim Carder & Roger Harris's marvellous Albion A-Z: A Who's Who of Brighton & Hove Albion FC, Mark Lawrenson was indeed our first six figure signing for the oddly precise sum of £111,111.
