I'm confused.
My local chippy is registered and thus must be claiming 50% back on all orders, and yet he is take away and not giving any discounts.
McD's is also take away only, can I claim it through the drive-through?

Apparently not. You can go in and place an order and then take it out with the discount, so I've read. Edit, see post #120

But it covers all manner of places from small cafes and MacDonalds to Michelin starred gaffs. All classes are catered for.

Yes, you just pay an extra tenner per person. Whether the restaurant still claims the money is up to them, and not really the customer’s business.

Clearly I am the only person that finds this push to get people out socialising, eating out, at a time when the infection rate is creeping up, a little unpalatable...!

My daughter's friend went to Six on Western Road. She thought they were on the scheme but when the bill came it was full price so she assumed she'd been mistaken and naively didn't say anything at the time. She later found out they are actually on the scheme so she rang them up. She was told she had to ask for the discount at the time.
This doesn't sound right. They will probably still claim the money back off the government so they will get an extra 50% income for that particular meal, or possibly even more because the fully charged price could be put through as if it was a discounted price. The system is really open to abuse especially with foreign visitors who won't be so aware of the scheme. There could also be quite a few ghost meals being sold.
It was a pretty stupid move to try and rip customers off though and then not offer to resolve the "mistake" when it was pointed out to them.

The discount will be applied automatically at participating restaurants only. That’s anywhere that applied to use the scheme after it was announced.

I would call them back and point out their 'mistake' and inform them that you will report them if they don't offer a refund.
Also a well worded Trip Advisor, Google, Trust Pilot review says a lot more to other people!

I've done a restaurant Monday, Tuesday and today. I asked each time before ordering, are you doing the 50% off? Each time yes was the answer.There is a lot of fraud going on with it though. When we were at the first restaurant we saw 2 Italian girls come in, they ordered, waited for their take away. We met them outside and I told them about the 50% deal if they had eaten inside. They told me they still got the 50% off.
I’m sure there is a bit of this type of fraud going on but I’m not sure what the government can do. As I said in an earlier post, if they add too many checks and conditions it becomes too bureaucratic and potentially off-putting for businesses to adopt. It would also take longer to roll out. It also becomes costlier to administer and therefore inefficient and less effective. All things considered they’ve called it spot on in my opinion.
And excellent work on your hat-trick. I’m envious of not being able to partake.

I went to Subway today for lunch. At the end of the sandwich rigmarole I was asked "Eat in or take away" when my £4.40 lunch magically reduced to £2.20. I then promptly walked out the shop with my eat in sarnie. Anyone buying a take out was charged full whack. Ridiculous.
Took advantage of the Amex small shop / Ricci double at the curry House tonight for good measure. Only flaw in the plan was the reduction in price of the main meal only. Pesky starters.
