I saw a post on another thread about the the difference next season being us turning draws into wins.

I also saw a comment that asked how many of those draws were points lost versus points gained. Given I am a sad sort i thought would list them to find out. This is based on what happened in the game not whether we should beat teams around us etc.

West Ham home (2 points lost) - no question it’s points lost as we battered them and VAR ruled out a goal
Newcastle away (2 points lost) battered them for 90 minutes another goal ruled out and an amazing goalline clearance
Burnley Home (2 points lost) - sickening, I’m still not over it.
Palace away (2 points lost) - as above
Villa home (2 points lost) - leading at half time, should have won!

Wolves Home (1 point gained) - I know we were ahead briefly but given their pace and power and overall results this season i was relieved with a point.
Chelsea Home (1 point gained) - one down five minutes to ago against top team till you know who did you know what.
West Ham away (1 point gained) - 2 goals down twice - great comeback
Sheffield United Away - (1 point gained) - came back against a good side
Wolves away (1 point gained) - tough place to go
Leicester Away (1 point gained) I know we missed a penalty but they are a good side and we were hanging on at the end.
Southampton away (1 point gained) - absolutely stole a point!
Watford home - (1 point gained) - one down late on the game until an own goal.

Newcastle home (neither gained or lost) we didn’t deserve to win or lose.

So by my calculations we lost 10 points by drawing and gained 8. So fairly equal over the season.

Not sure what this proves but I enjoyed remembering all the games! I’m sure some people will see it differently...

Nice post.

Often a good idea to talk about what has actually happened rather than just making stuff up!

My feeling is that the current group of players have been brilliantly managed and played well enough this season to have finished around 14th or 15th. No more, no less.

Steady improvement is the obvious aim. I’d be very, very happy with 13th or 14th next season.

Would be lovely to convert a few of our draws into wins - 3 wins from matches drawn this season would have given us another 6 points and we would be looking at a mid 40's total.

The caveat though is that almost every club every year will feel they should have converted some of their draws to wins, and narrow losses to draws. Everyone's in the same boat, but for us ultimately it's the extra few draws this season (14 compared to 9 last season) that have made us safe.

For me winning only 8 games this season is a disappointment (and is down on our first and second season's total of 9 wins) barring a surprise at Burnley.

Let's hope the lads can end the season on a high.

If we are to compare to our staying up tracker we have only won 2 of the 10 fixtures that have been identified as wins, Norwich & Bournemouth, our other 6 wins have been pleasant surprises. This is the area that needs to be addressed home victories against the teams from 10th to 20th.

We also have far too many draws, if 10 draws became 5 wins & 5 loses then we would be better off points wise. However one of the biggest issues is a plan B or an alternative option to change the game and open up opportunities, if we can add a different style of striker to the squad we have a great chance of being securely mid table next season

Nice post. Agree.

I've been looking at the table for a while now and realising that it's been draws that have kept us up, at least when it comes to the pure maths of a league table.

What I think you've done well there is call out where we've played nice looking "Potterball" (mostly the points dropped column) and where we've either been a bit more pragmatic (Wolves away, Sheff U, Lecester) or where we've been nulliified tactically (Watford and Wolves home). The one that can't be categorised is probably Chelsea, on paper a far better side than us but defensively frail. That overhead felt like a winner.

The lesson is we MUST score when on top. We need more strength in depth in midfield and attack. I think the defence, with White coming back and perhaps a better back up RB than Montoya, would be sorted.
