So far Leeds have spent £15m completing the Helder Costa transfer and £5m completing Meslier's transfer. So that's £20m spent just retaining two loan players that they had last season.

Rather than spending £8m on Harrison after his loan from Citeh, Leeds are looking at another year on loan with an optional £10m fee at the end.

They should have to pay the £18m for Augustin too.

For the sake of argument, if we let White go for just £25m, that would be £63m spent by Leeds just retaining the squad they had when they got promoted. Last year was not a vintage year for Championship teams either. They need a new striker even more than we do, and their manager still hasn't signed a new contract.

I honestly think they are in for an enormous wake up call. They’ll pick up some points early but will burn out by Christmas. I know they played well against Arsenal in the cup but week that’s the nature of the competition, week in week out against top Premier League teams is a different story.

This is clearly a club who have no understanding of how loan deals work. They have this on the one hand and on the other they are trying to buy a player that they have no buy clause for. They have been away too long. The world has moved on without them ... In every way.

Get a player you want now, while leaving money in the budget for other transfers, then pay for him next season. Sure, it takes a chunk out of next season's budget, but hopefully by then you will have had a successful season, and have more money next year. Or have less pressing need for signings. Essentially, if they had the space in their budget they would have bought Augustin, realised they'd signed a dud and been stuck with him. Because they structured the deal to ease their financing as a loan-to-buy, it seems like a bad deal.
