Haven't seen one, so...

Maty Ryan 8
Back to form after an uncharacteristic horror show against City. Decent game - got little lucky with the Ings goal ruled offside (although worth noting he DID just about save it - would have been a Lamptey OG). Going to cut him slack for spilling the bouncing cross, as he took it into his ribcage, just a minute or two after being checked for cracked ribs, and obviously in discomfort. Overall worth 7, the extra one point for the simply astonishing top corner save. Actually felt a tiny bit sorry for Vestergaard - he'll never hit a better shot in his entire career, and Maty pulls that out. Amazing agility.

Tariq Lamptey 5
Tariq Lamptey is a brilliant signing. He's going to be a very, very good Premier League footballer. But he has plenty of learning to do, as evidenced last night when a seasoned, wily campaigner in Ings, identified a weakness (positional sense) and ruthlessly targeted him. The difference in Tariq's performance levels in the three matches where he's played in the specific (right back) position he knows (Leicester, Norwich, Liverpool) and the two where he's been asked to do something a bit different (v United at right midfield / v Saints at RWB) have been stark. Nothing at all to fret about - he'll learn quick enough, and become brilliant in those roles, too.

Adam Webster 8
Probably AW's best Albion game. Terrific concentration (his main flaw, until now) and a couple of superbly executed last ditch tackles. Props.

Lewis Dunk 9 MOTM
To be honest, these days, you could just cut and paste 'Dunk 9 MOTM' from each ratings thread to the next. So good, and so consistent. Has been a very, very good centre back for at least three seasons, in terms of skillset - but he has now added an absolute confidence and authority in what he does - the rash moments have all but been eradicated. He's an incredible talent, and we're very. very lucky to have held on to him for this long.

Dan Burn 7
Did fine. Prefer him on the left of the back three, than pretending to be a marauding full-back, which rather exposes his passing / crossing ability. But another solid showing. Fair play to BDB, and hands up - he is a MUCH better player than I thought we'd signed.

Solly March 7
Obviously there are idiot posters on here who are going to spew out there prejudged 'March 2' nonsense, and others, desperate for him to suceed, will counter with hopeful 8s, but the truth, as it almost always is with Solly March, is that he did the job asked of him - was solid, worked hard, and never let anybody down. He looked our biggest threat in the first quarter of the game, and created some decent opportunities. One bad moment when he wandered under a switched cross (or possibly was pushed under it by Ings -VAR would have taken a look for sure) to let Ings in on goal.

Dale Stephens 7
Good showing. Looked the Stephens of a couple of seasons ago. Plenty have written him off, but he still knows this role better than any of the alternatives.

Davy Pröpper 5
Right off the boil since the restart. Such a good footballer at his best, but really not showing it right now for whatever reason. Gives the ball away far too often, and it has, and will, cost us.

Leandro Trossard 6
I'm getting a little bit frustrated with Trossard. Clearly very talented, and he's scored a couple of excellent recent goals, but he does waste a lot of good possession. The big 3 on 2 break in the second half last night, a case in point. It isn't even that he made a poor decision - just a lack of care in the crucial pass. He is our second top scorer though, and is going to come very good. I hope.

Glenn Murray 6.5
A largely peripheral figure for periods, but nice to have a target for balls into the box, and knows how to keep defenders busy. Beautiful assist - doing exactly what he is good at. Must be really hard at his age to come into the side having barely featured for so long. I hope he gets some minutes over the next two games.

Neal Maupay 6.5
Pestered the Saints' back line all night, and of course scored the all important opening goal, but didn't actually contribute much more. Missed a decent chance before the goal, but kept his head when the big chance came, and double figures in his first PL season is a great result.

Substitutes:

Martin Montoya 7.5
Largely stemmed the tide in the obvious problem area. Good change - shame it wasn't ten minutes earlier, when it became clear there was an issue.

Yves Bissouma 4
Yves probably has only Lamptey as competition for the award of 'Best Player Since Lockdown'. He's been exceptional, and I was astonished he was left out of the starting XI. But weirdly, he came on, and was awful. In his short time on the field, he charged around like the proverbial headless chicken, gave the ball away, conceded a free kick on the edge of our box, and ballsed up our one big chance to win the game. He's still going to be a great player though - he needs to just pretend this one never happened, and get back to what he's been doing.

Aaron Mooy 5.5
Brought on, because we couldn't retain possession for love nor money. Didn't materially change that fact.

Alexis MacAllister N/A - didn't get into the game in his fleeting minutes. No score.

Pascal Groß 7
Did what Mooy had been sent on to do - looked after the ball. If only he could run.

Good post and observations.

Always pleasing where ratings are made without the silliness of petty vendettas eg against March, Webster and Stephens.

The game completely passed by Propper and Mooy.

In fairness to Maupay, in the awful second half, imho he was battling on his own against two or three Stains defenders, as we reverted to desperate 2018/19 measures. He must’ve been knackered chasing lost causes. With the all important classy goal, I’d give him a 7.5.

I'm not going to really argue with any of that, it's a great summary.

In true NSC tradition I will point out the numerous people who piled into the "players who are not good enough thread" stating Ryan "never makes a worldie". Of course he doesn't. :lolol:

Where you (and that thread) may have a point is Propper. I've defended him up to now. He's a decent technical player with good work rate at his best. He was nowhere near his best last night and, when he came off, Bissouma took over and looked like an 18 year old triallist on a boat load of amphetamines.

Is it the green shirts, my eyesight or my telly, but Stephens took the field looking like a plasterer whose last game was for the Dog and Duck seconds. He's either carrying timber or our kit is REALLY unflattering. So it was a surpise to me when he played as well as he did, filling in at the back for Webster at the end and looking, like you said, like the old DS.

Webster and Dunk were immense and I'd up Maupay to a 7.

Good and thoughtful as usual. Really want to endorse the March stuff. The commentators even mentioned the work he does in defence, which I always notice.

Can't see how anyone in the midfield could score more than 5. Totally absent for all but 10-15 minutes last night. Agree with the rest apart from Dunk. Thought Dunk wasn't at his best last night. Webster MOM for me.

It was almost like Potter had found Hughton's notes in his desk and thought lets give this a go.

In terms of the central midfield, we're barely disagreeing, are we?

Agree with pretty much all of that. Lamptey struggled positionally again - he seems to get caught WAY too centrally, almost to the point where I’m wondering if Potter has asked him to do it (but I presume not). I think he’ll be a top player, but his lack of experience is sometimes exposed. As you say, the sub should have been made earlier.

I thought Potter had a poor game last night. The subs came too late, when we’d been struggling for 10-15 minutes. He then made too many in a short spell and we basically ended up with ten men when Webster got injured. To use all your subs when five are available and then lose a man to injury, as can always happen, is poor and could have been costly.

All in all a great point. I thought we were very good in the first half. Webster, March and Stephens were all very good and played their roles perfectly. We had some scares in the second half, but credit to Southampton too, who I think are a good team. It’s great that we’re almost safe, fingers crossed we can pick up some points in the next two and cement 15th place.

The performances of Ryan, Dunk, Webster, Burn, Stephens, Maupay, March were really good. When 7 of your team play well you should get a point. Needed most or all of Lamptey, Trossard (faded badly), Propper, Bissouma, Gross, Mooy (is he getting slower per match?), MacAllister (struggles when pressed, needs space) to up their game to get all 3 points.

I think that's a bit generous. The weightings across the board feel right but I'd peg the scores all back by 1.

Only one change to make and one comment.

Murray's flick was so clever. A flick from a striker who really understands movement and where the space is, it was brilliantly done.
Propper made some superb passes under pressure to launch attacks and did some crucial tracking back and defending. I thought defensively he was sharper last night and had improved on previous weeks. 5 seems harsh, I'd go 5.5

Generous scores for Ryan. Yes, one superb save, but he spilled another and much of his kicking was awful, either direct to a Saints player or into touch.

Overall scores are generous considering how truly awful we were in the second half and very very lucky to get a point out of the game.

Well HKFC has actually played in goal whereas your expertise seems to be in being a contrary old troll. I know whose mark I'd trust.

one of the best summaries of players post game that i have seen. A lot of agreement as well ,wonder if that was because we all saw it from the same viewing point. I think the gap though between Webster&Dunk and rest of team was immense. Bun is not a left back but he sure does make a good contribution.

Not much wrong with that assessment. Good observations about Lamptey as we were all getting a little carried away. Will be good but some obvious things to work on.

Admittedly pre match I groaned when Propper and Stephens named. Thankfully both were pretty solid. However, in the longer term it's time for Stephens to move on. His speed of thought and movement is now clearly championship level and always worried he will get sent off. Propper is an annoying enigma. You can see he has the ability but at present he's not on it in respect of any real attacking threat and gives away dangerous possession. We somehow need to work out how we can get the best from him.

Trossard is another frustration. Lots of ability but just so inconsistent. The way he mucked up the 3 v 2 break away just sums him up. Like Propper we somehow need to get the best from him. Judging by the darkness under his eyes does he need a good night's sleep :)

Bissouma is fine and and just need to work on his rough edges. Keep it simple sometimes don't give away possession cheaply.

What to do with Mooy and Gross? Both with technical ability but just too anonymous and all the pace of a sloth on mogadon! Mooy looks to be carrying a little weight and Gross hasn't done anyone for ages with his Cruyff turn.

Anyone think we try to tackle from the wrong side too often? ie trying to nick the ball and finding ourselves the wrong side of the ball and out of position.
