[Albion] Lack of Challenge for the Number One Shirt

We lose heavily at home to a team that has spent £1.2b and counting on players and have tanked quite a few other teams this season.

Am I bothered - no

Also why because of this does everyone consider a raft of our players unsuitable and suddenly crap ?

Where did I say that? I said I rated Ryan but rued the seeming lack of challenge for the shirt or possible rotation.

I don’t think a lack challenge for number 1 shirt is the issue. As said, no PL club seem able to hold a good keeper as backup. The good ones want to play.

We do need to improve our keeper position however, that I agree on.

Seems poor old Maty is the scapegoat of the month. Whose turn next?

Ryan is a very capable goalkeeper, but no better than that. He doesn’t make too many howlers and he doesn’t really makes ‘worldy’ saves. He is a £5mil goalkeeper in a market where this amount will buy most sides an able reserve goal keeper. He lets goals in that others may save but you can’t say it’s his fault.............. but you feel some keepers would make the save.

He has no competition this year as Button is a Championship keeper at best and Steele hasn’t seemEd to play at all in his 2 years here.

We either accept the Ryan is what he is or will need to spend a fair bit on a new number 1. The other alternative is hoping that Walton has progressed enough to offer him some serious competition next year!

This is exactly what I was posting last night. He is worth what we paid for him, nothing more. Whereas around the other areas of the squad we have paid up to 4 times the amount to just give competition to the place, in goal which is a huge position on the pitch we have a very average keeper (for the premiership) and a couple of cheap understudies.

His distribution is found wanting if it needs to go long. I can't recollect where a quick long ball has resulted in us getting a breakaway goal. In fact there is no going long with Ryan as he can't kick it very far. In truth though if that was all he was limited in I'd accept it but it's not. He's competent with few mistakes but just never makes that special save.

If we are to progress, and we keep being told of the vision, then we need to look at where we can get better within our budget. This is certainly one where we can without breaking the bank. Either that or bring in our youth. Walton has been playing league football for a 5 years now, he's either good enough or not. We should know by now, he's aged 24 a year older than Henderson.

By some maybe, I've been consistent for over a season. Not slating him as he hasn't been poor just plays with limitations.

Scapegoat I'm not sure what you mean? Yes he has been criticised for his display last night and some supporters, myself included don't massively rate him. I don't think he's poor but I would like at least there to be some competition for the no.1 jersey.
If on a Brighton and Hove Albion fans forum we can't debate the merits of the players then I'm uncertain of the purpose of NSC. No one is saying we lost to Man City just because Ryan was in goal. We are saying do you think he's good enough to be our no.1? Do we need another or better back up or even a replacement for him?

Scapegoat no chance I'm not buying that

Walton seems to blow very hot and cold, but is a great shot stopper. Not the best with the ball at his feet either. He goes from hero to villain at Blackburn every few games.

Sanchez has great distribution and makes impressive saves but also makes a lot of howlers. His Rochdale side have conceded more goals than almost any other in L1 this year (though you can’t lay all the blame at his door).

Both can become very competent keepers but I’m not sure either are ready to take over from Ryan. Probably would be an upgrade on Button and Steele though.

Nothing wrong with Ryan.
Nothing wrong with giving him some class competition for his position.
Walton perhaps.....(or sell him )

He had a bad few games, I don't think he deserves the abuse he gets. I do think he needs competition though, Button and Steel are hardly going to push him. Wonder if we could nab one of the relegated teams' goalkeepers on the cheap or give Walton/Sanchez a go...

Completely agree and an important point. Perhaps this is something GP could work on in our set piece defending strategy, afterall we play with 3 big centre halfs a lot of the time.

Are you suggesting that we start playing with shortarse centre backs so Maty has to take more aerial crosses??

To be honest if either BDB or Duffy are on the field, I'd rather they were left to do the job they excel in.

Has he had abuse? I've seen constructive criticism.

Ryan has faced no threat to his place in the starting lineup since he came here. Whether that was a condition of us getting Australia’s number one, the contract guaranteeing him starting league games throughout the season regardless who knows, but neither Hughton did, nor Potter has, deviated from Ryan in the league, which suggests there maybe something in that. All around us you see form-based keeper switches - Man City and Palace springing to mind - the jersey there to be challenged for. Imho we let a very good, experienced keeper go in Tim Krul, when he could have got league game time here. How can keep your back up keepers motivated when the route through appears blocked, cup games the best bone the club will throw your way?

In saying that, I like and rate Ryan, but complacency is inevitable if you’re not having to look over your shoulder.

Absolutely nothing to do with Ryan being guaranteed a starting place every week, why would the club do that? The reason both Button and Steele were brought in was to help fill the number of HGP players needed in the squad.

We have Christian Walton coming back for next season, and l think he is a far better bet than either of our current back up keepers. If he isn't included in the squad then what point is there in hanging on to him?

On here? "He should have saved this and that, he's poor, sell him" among a few I've seen already.

He should have saved this or that, Abuse? FFS get a grip. It's like commenting on whether Burn should have scored against Liverpool instead of hitting it sideways. Yes he should tall streak of piss get rid

Whoa whoa. Hold up.

Don't have a go at me when I'm NOT giving him abuse, I am saying I am SEEING it, I whole heartedly DON'T give out players abuse. If you see any of my other posts, I back the team 100% because I love these lads and this club.
