Another victim of the coronavirus crisis :nono: now pushed back to May 2021.

Next year's Brit Awards have been pushed back by three months to May, to have a better chance of staging a full live ceremony featuring the biggest and best music stars.

The 41st edition of the music awards show was due to take place in February, as usual, at London's O2 Arena, hosted by Maya Jama and Trevor Nelson.

But uncertainty around the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has prompted the music industry to delay it.

Organisers said they want "outstanding production levels, superstar performances and live excitement, things that have become synonymous with the Brit awards and that have wowed our population for many years".

Geoff Taylor, chief executive of The Brits and industry body the BPI, said: "We believe that the best way to achieve this in 2021 is to move the show back a few months to May. We understand the frustration of music fans in the UK at this news but we are sure they understand our reasons and can wait 3 more months for the musical event of the year.

"We are already at work planning a spectacular event that will remind us how important music has been in getting us all through these difficult times."

The eligibility period for the awards will be altered, although music releases have continued during the pandemic. There is likely to be a shake up of the awards to better reflect black musical talent in the wake of the black lives matter movement and to support musical artists who do not belong to either of the main male and female musical categories.

Last year's ceremony featured performances from pop stars including Billie Eilish, Dave, Lewis Capaldi and Lizzo.

Audience members will not be socially distanced or required to wear face coverings once seated in the arena, however they will be required to follow existing Government guidance when travelling to the venue and adhere to rules set out by the event organisers.

All attendees must have proof of a negative lateral flow test result to enter the venue. As part of the wider scientific research on the trial events, attendees will also be asked to take a test after the event to gather further evidence on the safety of indoor settings, reduced social distancing and the removal of non-pharmaceutical interventions like face coverings.

They will also have to provide contact details for NHS Test and Trace to ensure everyone can be traced in the event of an audience member receiving a positive test after the event.
