The Times is reporting that a group of Premier League clubs are Planning to campaign to end the ban on drinking alcohol in your seat during a game. I saw this on twitter, and in finding the original article have found it is behind the paywall, but if you have access, the article is here: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/...otball-fans-drinking-in-their-seats-5glsjhxjd

The tweet I saw was this one:

[tweet]1276581744351735810[/tweet]

The replies were surprisingly negative. Along the lines of 'if you can't go without beer for 90 mins...'I expected more support, along the 'reduce binge drinking', 'in line with other sports' etc.

Having said that, my initial reaction was expecting to be annoyed by people going back and forth to get another round in, constantly disturbing everyone.

Won't happen but it'd solve the half time bar bottleneck.

....but create a new one in people getting up to pop out for a pint during the game.

When I chose our ST seats at the Amex I deliberately went for mid-row seats so we don’t get too hassled by the twats that arrive late, leave early, go out on 42 mins to get their half time pint, get back 5 mins after the second half has started and then leave on 85 mins to get ahead of the bus/train queues......best decision I’ve made.

And to add to this, watching rugby is a bloody nightmare - to'ing and fro'ing of people getting beer; up down all the
bloody match.

Plus football fans are mostly idiots. Beer will be thrown, drunks will fight. Football fans are the reason football fans can't have nice things.

Would be happy if you were allowed to bring your drink to your seat but keep the bars shut during the match.

I would be happy if i could get some beers in during the game for me and friends if thats what we wanted, walked back to my seat causing 5 seconds of inconvenience at the most to the person i was walking past, which isnt really an inconvenience at all in the scope of being in a sports stadium where getting up and down is a regular occurrence anyway.
I would be happy if someone invented something called a cup holder for those unlucky people that cant hold on to a beer when over excited and would be happy if those in charge realised it isnt the 1980`s anymore and you really can treat the majority of us like adults.

ps not having a go at your post, which in all seriousness would seem like a good initial stepping stone to easing the daft current law

Sadly that neatly sums it up.

Never visited the Amex then, where drinking before and after the game is actively encouraged? Jesus wept.

The club have already said that if drinking in your seat were to return, it would not be with the bars open during the game. In other words, you get your beer before kick-off and take it with you. That is all they would be discussing - if indeed they are discussing it at all, which I very much doubt.

Ironically the current rules encourage binge drinking. If it was such a desperate rule against alcoholism then ban it a rugby as well. Down your pint before you get back on the terrace and leave 5 mins before half time

Was seriously pissed off this year (i think) when we had televised game at the AMEX and drunk dicks were throwing beers at the screens. Guys this is literally the only time we are allowed to drink in view of the pitch and you choose this time to behave like dick heads.

Has alcohol always been banned at football, or was it possible back in the good old days?

I've never been convinced by this argument. Most people have been in the pub/train/stadium drinking for a few hours before the game, how much difference can the odd extra beer really make? The damage is already done before kickoff.

Sufficient cup holders will stop the nuisance problem, although I've never been bothered by this. I was at Lords once and myself and 3 mates had tickets in the mound stand which is a mid price ticket. Between us and the isle were a man and wife. They got pissed off with us about 20 minutes into the first session because someone went to get beers! We ALWAYS respect the etiquette and won't walk out mid-over. For the rest of the day they refused to stand up so someone had the squeeze between their knees and the seat in front, it's just weird!

We can drink in our seats at Rugby. Trouble is you often get someone wanting everyone to get up for the four beers they're bringing along the row.

I do subscribe to the 'Why can't you go 90 mins without a beer ?' brigade.

Always amusing when some wide-eyed innocent first-timer to the Amex - and possibly to football - tries to take their beer to their seat. Occasionally the stewards are so dozy that they succeed

If beers are allowed to be brought back to the seats you have to accept that there will be beer flying everywhere in goal celebrations ( what a waste when VAR then chalks off the goal ).

I can't see the club wanting the hassle of dealing with all the complaints.

Reminds me of few seasons ago when we took a non football supporter friend to the Amex. We were quite refreshed when we took our seats and didn’t notice he’d casually carried his pint in. Unaware of the rules he stood up to let someone pass and took a big sup in full view of about four stewards. They made a beeline for him and escorted him to the concourse. We didn’t see him again that afternoon.

He said he had apologized profusely and been told he was the nicest person they’d ever had to throw out the stadium.

FWIW I agree that people should be able to take their drinks in but the bars should be closed during play. That or a keg on the end of every row.

I hope this doesn’t happen with bars open during the game. The Russia World Cup was a nightmare, I was in the neutral end for the Croatia semi final and it was a constant stream of Russians walking past to get drinks or go to the toilet.

Weirdly the other games when I was in the England end it didn’t really happen

While I would love to watch live football with a pint of beer, I also love not being hit with flying beer. Maybe it'll work in 1901 but not the main stands

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
It’s not just the beers that are the problem, but those with weak bladders. There are a few on our row who must only ever see 20 mins of each half, the amount of times they go back and forth.
