A few pars from a long piece...

As Brighton pass the ball around with a bit of confidence, Jones is interested to hear about Graham Potter’s attempts to introduce a new style of play at the club and how well that is working. He mentions that he went to Sweden to see the now Brighton manager when he was in charge at Ostersund and was hugely impressed, in particular by the way in which Potter “really bought into making the team part of the community”.

Arsenal start the second half brightly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang breaks through twice in the opening 10 minutes. His first shot is held at the second attempt by Mat Ryan, Brighton’s Australian goalkeeper, and his second effort is ruled out for offside.

“So I reckon this is an interesting period now, mate,” Jones says. “It’s one thing we always talk about — Arsenal have just had some disappointment (at not scoring) and now they’re at the most vulnerable because of that disappointment. One or two drop their heads. This is when leadership counts — getting the team back on, defending hard, being disciplined, ‘We’ll get the ball back soon and then we can attack’. Because Brighton have got a bit of a kickalong now because they’ve got a second chance. That psychology of the game is just so important.”

Creative with his thinking and unorthodox with his methods, Jones will sometimes manufacture problems away from a match day to test players.

For example, there have been occasions when he has deliberately left the team with no transport to get back from training. “It’s just opportunities for the players to lead,” he explains. “I started it with Japan, started having team meetings and training sessions and we didn’t turn up, to see what players would come forward. We’ve experimented a little bit with England and it just helps the players grow. And if they fail, then it’s OK because they’ll learn from it. And then we can keep going forward.

Although Brighton have had a couple of half-chances while we’ve been talking, both of us feel Arsenal are more likely to score first. With the second half now edging towards the midway point, Jones wonders whether the time is right for Brighton to “change the momentum of the game” with a couple of substitutions.

He’s barely finished making that point when Nicolas Pepe curls a sublime left-footed shot into the top corner. “There you go — right on cue!” Jones says. “The other point of that is that you want to make the replacements before you have to make the replacements.”

Jones is an interesting guy. He watches a lot of cricket too and is keen to take things from other sports.

He's been running a few online seminars for rugby coaches during this lockdown session and they've been very illuminating. I think a lot of football coaches could learn from him

As CLR James might have said "What do they know of football who only football know?"
