You are correct, however I’m not sure you should be able to just rip them down.

Churchill/Mandela/Nelson/Washington etc all have another side to them - can we rip them down?

Maybe a city/town debate/vote on taking them down v a sign saying why they are controversial is the way forward.

The Society of Merchant Ventures was able to block that from happening for decades with their power and influence in the way things are run in Bristol. However, they very impressively acknowledged this last year and stated their actions were regrettable.

Do you have actions committed by Churchill/Mandela/Nelson/Washington that are in anyway comparable to the horrific things Colston did or is this just another pathetic analogy?

Churchill didn’t cover himself in glory in Africa in the name of the British Empire did he?

Mandela lead a group that performed terrorist attacks

Washington owned slaves.

Nelson opposed abolition of slavery

Each of those people went on to do great things and would argue some of the actions they took was for the greater good, does that undo the bad they did ?

There’s nothing “pathetic” showing both sides of historic figures.

As i thought.

No actions comparable to this:

"During Colston's involvement with the Royal African Company from 1680 to 1692, it is estimated that the company transported over 84,000 African men, women and children to the Caribbean and the rest of the Americas, of whom as many as 19,000 may have died on the journey.[7] The slaves were sold for labour on tobacco, and, increasingly, sugar plantations, whose planters considered Africans would be more suited to the conditions than British workers, as the climate resembled the climate of their homeland in West Africa. Enslaved Africans were much less expensive to maintain than indentured servants or paid wage labourers from Britain.[8]

In 1682, he made a loan to the Bristol Corporation and the following year, became a member of the Society of Merchant Venturers."

As you thought what? Colston was a slaver, I’ve not said that side of him wasn’t awful - rather than pulling down statues isn’t the way to go.

So it’s OK to do bad things as long as it’s not too far?

Churchill statue is ok as he only said “ I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes," rather than single handedly doing it.

How many died due to actions in Africa he played a part in?

Indian famine?

Unsurprisingly, there is absolutely nothing about this on Imperial College Union’s website.

In fact, it’s likely that 1 (one) student submitted this absolute nonsense idea using this form: https://www-d7.imperialcollegeunion.org/your-union/your-idea

However, the journo who has used this story as gammon-bait should get a pack on the back, they have clearly rattled a lot of right-wing geriatrics with this total non-story.

If this attitude towards historical figures continues, there will be no statues in the future, as we will all be judged as contributing to climate breakdown.

You cannot judge people who lived in the past by today’s values. It makes no sense. We are each a product of the time period that we live in. Some of us lead better lives than others. Ghandi for example being one of the best.

This better lives than others point needs some finessing……..

For some Ghandi was the epitome of a colonial racist oppressor!!
