I have a garden with two large mature oak trees (at least 50 ft high) and I have permission to cut 30% back, but I have no idea what a reasonable charge is for this work, and not easy to Google.

Has anybody else had work like this done, and what did you pay?

we have 4 Sycamores with TPOs on them and had 30% reduction a couple of years ago( we are in St Leonards) ... quotes ranged from £1800 to about £4000 if I recall correctly so do "shop" about

Huge difference dependant on access/overhanging neighbours/roads buildings or in open and cut limbs can simply fall to ground. Cut limbs heaped on site to burn when dry or taken away.

Just had a reduction of 2 trees, a paper birch and Himalayan cherry. Most quotes were around £350 for half a day. I had to get planning permission because we're in a conservation area.

I had no knowledge or recommendations, just got quotes from a few local companies and in the end went with the only person who bothered to come and look at it. He only lived 5 minutes away and I liked him so worked out ok, did a decent job.

I'd say best advice is reputable company, not the guys that rock up and hack you're tree to bits and leave all the wood, other than what the want for logs, on your drive!

Day rate for a good gardener / Brinsbury trained tree surgeon is around £180-£240 for surgeon and a lad, with crap taken away (sometimes add £100). I think there's one and a half to two days work there. Don't forget if you have a wood burner etc they'll also chop into logs for you. (or for you to flog?)

Used them a couple of times, one recently, for a bay tree in our garden about twenty foot. Last bill was £150 including VAT. Would recommend them and they do a great job cleaning up afterwards.

On the subject of Bay Trees .... we've a 20' plus one to be encouraged back down to a 6' job, is there any value in the bay leaves (bulk, not by the 50g bag)?

They grow so fast, especially when cut back. I thought the same for the leaves but could not give them away. I suppose it’s down to who you know.

Whoever you choose, please have the work done after August. Whatever the tree surgeons say, there may well be nesting birds somewhere within those amazing trees.
