He's been at the club about a year
I imagine it's part of what seems to be the club's desire to be seen to be a thought leader in how the Premier League progresses, or doesn't, with Dan Ashworth being a well-respected figure in the game.
Maybe people are more prepared to listen when they have space to fill and no actual sport to fill it with.

Think both Barber and Ashworth have almost become the default go-to PL spokespersons in these strange days. Both are very good communicators, both seem happy to raise their heads above the parapet when others seem maybe happier keeping their heads down. Also - tho might be just imagining it - the Amex seems to have a much higher profile than it did previously, in terms of framing national media PL reports

When mentioned (SSN?) he is always introduced as "Brighton technical director, a post he held with England for a number of years" which makes him sound to be a person to listen to.
It seems like the club has been very pro-active in maintaining a regular press-conference via online conferences, making themselves regularly available to talk and answer questions. I don't know that all other clubs in the division are offering such access "in these unprecedented times". But even so, there is only so much that can be said by Potter and Barber, so yeah, probably just another voice to put out there and mix things up a bit.
