Will police & ambulance workers be using this app on their devices when working?

I was told off on the other thread for expressing reservations, so I will simply say 2 things.

1) I don't trust Johnson and Cummings at all.

2) The producers of the "NHS" app are directly linked to the Vote Leave campaign.

I don't want Cummings' cronys to have any access to my data, so unless things change I won't be downloading the app.

If the app had been produced openly, sandbox tested by trustworthy experts, and by a Cummings independent group then I would use it.

I hate giving away data to the powers that be as much as you, but how is this app any worse than anything you already got? Once your cellphone is on, everywhere you go and anything you do could be traced. Its not even a secret. The Vault 7 leaks even suggest that it could be done with your phone turned off.

Best case scenario: It works and stops the spread of the virus meaning fewer deaths and less economic turmoil.

Worst case scenario: a 3rd party has my postcode, phone number and location details stored on a server somewhere. We'll all be social distancing so location will be my house, the shop or a local walk.

It's not much of a choice really.

I'll download it for the good of the nation if it helps

However, does it satisfy human rights and data protection laws, I hope the government have done their homework on this, on the face of it a a decentralised system seems less risky in the face of legal challenges

Does seem we are the outlier again...

I like you have reservations only because tracking apps were already available but the Government were advised by the SAGE advisory group present at some of these meeting were Dominic Cummings and Marc Warner who is a data analyst working on Dominic Cummings team. Marc has a brother Ben Warner, who owns a data mining software company called Faculty IA who recruited by Dominic Cummings to run the data modelling for the Vote Leave Campaign.

SAGE with Cummings and Warner in attendance advised government to award Faculty IA a £280 million contract to write the NHS tracking App remember they are specialists in data mining and that tracing apps are already available.

I think a tracing App is a really good way to identify hot spots for the virus but Do I trust the Tories,Cummings or the Warner brothers to deliver this

It's an app, right? You can install it for the short term for altruistic reasons for the common good. Then uninstall it as and when you see fit. Or not install it at all. People banging on about privacy issues don't think hmgov and its agencies aren't already monitoring exactly what they want to monitor? Dream on
Uninstall may will be an option, but don't bet on a "marker" being left on your phone.

on the face of it a decentralised system is poorer at delivering the capabilities. and not really decentralised, there will still be passing of data through central control system. legal challenges are unlikely as consent given and GDPR article 89 explictly gives exemptions from many GDPR clauses for research and statistcal purposes.

My (not particularly old) phone won't allow me to download any new apps - unless I delete WhatsApp or two of the very few others I have...

Some of the posts on this thread are beyond disbelief. Get off your highorse, stop with the pathetic teenage-like stubbornness and do whats right for everyone. Download the app and help the rest of us.

It's a NO from me, and someone on their high horse demanding I download it aint gonna wash with me. There is something more sinister to the App in my view.

How does it cost £280m to write an app?

I am intrigued by the technology involved. All I can find is references to 'nearby' in relation to people. What exactly does this mean, and how does it work? Does it mean if your phone gets within two metres of another phone, the app is triggered / records the contact. Or is it 5m / 10m? Does it work through glass and so on (ie: you could be within 2m of someone, but totally shielded). What happens if you are on a different floor in the same building?

What concerns me is that a lot of people could pass within the chosen distance of an infected person, and then have to self-isolate - despite the chances of them becoming infected from that person being virtually minimal.

Not in a million years.

Very much so... The blind trust displayed on this thread, whilst belittling anyone who challenges the concept of this app is worrying! I work in IT/Network security and understand the full implications of an app such as this. I'm not sure some of the folk here classing anyone who questions this app as a "tin foil hat" loony even know what they are talking about when it comes to technology, and just blindly trust what's presented to them.

To quote Benjamin Franklin: “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

It uses BLE - the kind of thing that shops use to track people round shops etc. So you need to be within a few meters of something else with BLE and be close for a period of time. Walking past someone on the pavement is unlikely to record anything.

Also on current Android & Apple versions the app will only work if your phone is unlocked and operating. So no good in your pocket locked

Totally agree and I work in IT/InfoSec as well. A lot of blind faith going on.

I will use it as it has been the main reason why Korea and Singapore have done so well. I dont think we should ignore that.

The government does need to come out with some reassurances. I think it should be open source. I dont doubt that they are telling the truth about it not sharing information till you confirm you are tested positive because people have been caught lying about thinks like that and it doesnt end well for them. There will be plenty of people checking it.

That is the least of my worries though, they are already using information provided by google maps mentioned recently and probably many other apps. They need to come clean what will happen after that positive test though. South Korea checks up on everyone that is in isolation due to testing positive. They are required to go into isolation as are we. If they go out they will send people after them. If they leave their phone behind they will be running the risk of missing a check up call (they call a few times a day). If they miss a phone call they send people round to check you arent breaking your quarantine.
