St George, nah, Bill should be the symbol of our Englishness. Especially our humour. And he was English, unlike George.

So maybe a thread of adapted Shakespeare quotes is what is called for.

He was born, and died on this day. So let's quote the bard.

ON Albion's Premier League status..

'We know who we are and not what we may be...'

ON the present situation..

'Now is the winter, spring, summer and autumn of our discontent'

I'm sure some can add.

He died on this day but we don't know that he was born on it - we don't know his actual birthdate. It was around this time so we assume that the 23rd is his birthday but we'll never know

Still more reliable than St George :D

"A plague upon it, I have forgot the map !"

"That ingrate and cankered Bollingbroke"

That's my lot from my school Shakespeare. To be blunt, I can't stand his plays / books and can't understand why they still teach them in schools.

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.

I think the first quote I used when I went to an away match at Yeovil Town.

You mean instead teach some right-on, trendy, "you have to imagine you've got one foot in a bucket of custard to appreciate it" modern shite? Really? I'm disappointed
in you Westdene.

What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin;
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honor.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires.
But if it be a sin to covet honor,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England.
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honor
As one man more methinks would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbors,
And say "To-morrow is Saint Crispian."
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say "These wounds I had on Crispian's day."
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

:salute:

Happy St. George's day all. Absolutely nothing to hide away or be ashamed of.

I think you're missing my original point. If we want to gather around something that is symbolic of all the good things about this culture, or can be made to be, then how about something relevant ?

You can do what you want, one of the things that makes England worth celebrating. But for one day a year why not celebrate our patron saint. Would you begrudge the Irish patriotic folk St. Patrick's day? Anyhow cheers to you whatever your choice.

My ideal day would be a village green and a charity cricket match. Followed by a nice roast afterwards. Today would have been perfect.

I might be wrong but I think there might be something worthwhile between a play that's over 400 years old and something "right-on, trendy". Maybe something in modern day English ?
