Can anyone point me at a multi-platform (iphone/android/windows/mac) conferencing/chat for our extended family to use for a quiz I have agreed to run tomorrow ?

Twitch and OBS will let you stream and your family can enter via text chat. Products such as Go To Meeting and Microsoft Teams let you broadcast your screen whilst maintaining voice chat but are chargeable. There is probably a VC system that is free that lets you broadcast your screen but have never needed to look.

Zoom?

We used it on Friday to link up with the sis in law and her family and my mum in law (for a family quiz).

Worked really well.

Definitely Zoom. Have had meetings in the last two weeks on Zoom, Teams, Skype, Jabber and Houseparty, Zoom was the best by miles. No lagging, easy to use, better quality pictures, able to share screens (picture rounds in your quiz etc)

Only issue is the free version has a 40 min limit, but this won’t be enforced the first couple of times you use it.

When you’ve used up your 40 minutes, can you not just start another meeting with the same people and get another 40 free minutes? Bit of a faff I know, but maybe one way round it. We spent 4 hours yesterday on a combination of WhatsApp and messenger as none of us all had the same thing, which was fun but a little disjointed.

We used Zoom last week. You can send private messages to the person asking the questions - which worked well as everyone could respond without giving their answers away.

The last couple of Saturdays some friends and I have had a virtual "party" using Zoom and Jackbox TV. I think you have to pay for Jackbox (not sure how much) but it is a lot of fun. The host shares their screen and there are lots of different games you can play. Each person responds or sends answers using their mobile phone. Well worth looking into for any group looking to get together socially(-distant) over the next few weeks.

If you just want voice and text across any device (including web browser) then you really can't beat Discord.
Absolutely the best system for voice and text... Although no video, you can upload images easily. Handles private messaging and multiple text/voice channels.

Compatible across all devices and, for anyone fairly tech savvy, easy to add 'bots' to customise behaviour, integrate with music services, roll dice, etc.

Looking at what people have added as plus points for other software... Discord is completely free and used extensively by millions over a long period (it is as robust as the come).

You can share your screen and this is visible regardless of how everyone else is accessing the software.

Use Zoom for our family and friend bingo sessions. Usually get three rounds in the 40 minutes window before starting a new meeting for the rest.

I like the concept, but the games look a bit meh. Were there any in particular that worked well?

I like (and can remember the names of!) Quiplash 2 and Drawful (I can't draw for toffee). But most of the other games we have played have been fine too (the only one we've played that I thought was crap was Fakin' It). Each game typically has 2 or 3 rounds and might last 15-20 minutes - if it isn't working, stop it and find something else. Let's face it, it's as much about the socialising, having a few beers and getting to interact with your mates as much as it is the games themselves. Well worth a try in my opinion (although I didn't pay and don't know how much it costs).

I've hosted three on zoom and it's been pretty easy

you can even do 'breakout rooms' meaning having the ability to have teams (you put people in teams and then once you have asked a question/questions you can send them off and they're in their own private chat)
