NHS: Premier League players' initiative to generate & distribute funds

Premier League players have launched a "collective initiative" to help generate funds for the National Health Service and distribute them "where they are needed most".

The initiative - named #PlayersTogether - has been set up to "help those fighting for us on the NHS frontline" amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It has partnered with NHS Charities Together (NHSCT).

Health Secretary Matt Hancock "warmly welcomed" the "big-hearted decision".

Hancock had previously said players should "take a pay cut and play their part".

Former England captain and Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker tweeted he was "proud of our players".

"Footballers are doing their bit as I was confident they would," he wrote.

"Let's hope that others that are in a position to help, those that weren't unfairly targeted, do likewise."

More than 7,000 people have died with coronavirus in the UK, according to the latest Department of Health figures.

Good solution, could be better than taking a wage cut (which is probably far away considering a fat collective decision on this could hurt the least paid players + some foreign players that are supporting whole villages in their home countries) if done right.

This is a great initiative but I thought one of the main reasons for players taking a pay cut was so that the the non playing staff of their team would continue to be paid in full rather than being laid off, furloughed, etc.

True. And this would probably only take an extremely small pay cut to cover this

Now we need the bankers, hedge fund managers, CEOs and billionaires to do the same.

And the estimated £200 million hit to the taxman, that could be used for the NHS

Although a small cut in wages would leave cash in a club to pay the other "normal" employees, not only generating taxes but also meaning clubs don't need to furlough employees and get money from the government

Got a real sense this is the players getting fed up with Taylor and the PFA for being so slow to act................anyway, good for them and good to see so many of ours involved

Most PL clubs if not all already dont need to do it.

That's indirect though and will take too long..............and 'could' is the operative word............

Yep, we had a message from the Group CEO yesterday saying he and the Group FD are taking a pay cut for 6 months & waiving cash bonuses and the Chairman is giving 100% of his fee to charity.
