[Technology] Consumer advice - credit/debit card readers for payments

Via work I am doing some research on behalf of a local charity regarding use of these during the current "situation" and after. I know that there is plenty of choice and that the purchase cost is modest but I want one that is reliable, easy to use and ticks most or all of the following boxes. Personal experiences welcomed:-

  • Easy to use.
  • Contactless facility.
  • Able to accept payments by phone.
  • WiFi/bluetooth connectivity.
  • Low % usage fee.

I have a Sum Up card reader which is linked to an app on my phone.
It wasn't expensive to buy and it's very easy to use. I don't know about taking payment over the phone though, as my customers are always there when I take payments.

I've previously worked in the charity sector. Barclays Bank issued some card readers to us (think it was called Barclaycard Anywhere) that used an app on a smart phone to take the payments. Obviously contactless payments could only be taken up to whatever the limit is (£45 isn't as of 1st April?).

We also used the iZettle card reader which works in the same way as the Barclaycard Anywhere.

Not sure if either solution will allow card payments via phone as we had a different system for that.
