Just wanted some feedback from people in Brighton and Hove area about their internet connection since the shutdown.

Trying to get people connected and working from home but all are having problems in different areas especially today and last Monday. I know it’s probably under big pressure and maybe people should be asked to reduce social use in work hours as workers from home are surely priority.

Anyone else having issues and with any particular providers?

But what are work hours? Because many of the people working from home are also parents, many employers (well, mine are and I assume they're not alone) are allowing a lot of flexibility in working hours to accommodate child care requirements, and other possible care responsibilities, meaning the traditional 9-5 is out the window.

As far as quality of connection, touch wood, mines been ok so far. An occasional lag once or twice a day, but not so much I'd notice.

I worked from home for 18 years, doing shifts so working all hours. Connecting to a corporate lan via a VPN isn't hugely data intensive unless you're sharing videos or suchlike.
I'd be more inclined to look at the bandwidth of the server they are connecting to do you need to increase that ?

Our work VPN is creaking at the moment.....it’s not my own broadband as all the personal stuff is working fine. Things like Zoom and jabber really lagging - they’ve asked us to refrain from having video on calls for now if we can.

Cheers will have a look. Phones on different connection VPN seem fine but using Chrome remote and log me in seem very hit and miss especially and certain times ie Monday morning, when the 5pm speech is on.

Most internet providers aren’t seeing massive peaks. Certainly at worst it’s on par with a major sporting event or new computer game release. Are you sure it’s not the work infrastructure or something ?

Not sure about the same as a big sporting event millions at home Netflix sky games porn!

Must have had some impact. It’s people at home getting cut off so must be their providers if they are just taking over the office pc’s ?

How many people have you got hanging off that VPN ? That'l be your bottleneck.

As an example If you have 50 people who all work from an office you will have an internet connection of 50-100mb from the intranet to the great beyond. If your server is within the intranet, you'll not have loads of traffic going "outside", if your server is cloud-based, you will be using more, but only to/from the cloud server.
Move all those 50 people to home, with an average of 20mb DSL, they are all going over the 50mb to the intranet. If you have cloud-based servers then each time you access the server you are using double bandwidth as you have to pull data from the cloud and send it to the home user.
Some things you can do is to check your traffic shaping to ensure you are prioritising traffic, consider increasing your bandwidth if your router is dropping a lot of packets and block anything that uses video (youtube/facebook etc) at the firewall (especially if there are traffic spikes at lunchtime).
