I’m looking into something that can be sorted out fairly quickly for my Dad (he doesn’t know it yet) ...he’s 92 and it’s part of a plan to help him over the next ‘period of time’ to enable him to keep in contact visually and perhaps broaden his entertainment via the good ol tv

EE do a package for telephone calls anytime time of day and 10mps internet via an ASDL connection......is this speed good enough for video calls? And watching IPlayer etc ...erm he won’t be downloading stuff or playing games

I hadn’t rung them yet ...but am I right in thinking this can all be plugged into an existing telephone socket fairly speedily ..or am I being a tad naive

It can be enabled fairly quickly (ie days rather than weeks) in most circumstances. They will enable it in the exchange and post him a hub to plug in. Setup is fairly straighforward.
10mb is ok for video calls, Iplayer, youporn etc.

Yeh. EE is good but good luck with teaching him.

I tried to teach my Dad last year and he gave up trying to learn as he is 82

In fact think his words were. " F#ck that for a carry on . By the time I get through all my good looks will have gone and faded "

Lol...well we text each other each day so he’s good with a mobile...and I have downloaded stuff to a usb stick before and he’s been able to use different parts of the smart tv....

The current cost isn’t far away what he’s paying Virgin for just the telephone line.....not much to financially lose if it doesn’t work and the upside that he won’t feel totally isolated ...we’ll see

dont forget to tell them, at every opportunity, that he's old and vulnerable, then can often speed things up a bit.

Another thing to consider is can he use a neighbours Wifi until he gets his own set up ?
