To say that this choice is just a little bit 'left field' for my usual musical taste is probably the understatement of the year. But I listen to everything and have to admit a liking for both The Spice Girls and Girls Aloud who both benefited from having great song writing and production teams behind them. Yes I suppose it helps that they are very attractive girls, but they could also sing pretty good as well.

The under-rated one:

The Wyatt video gave me the impression it was an earlier version than UB40's.

Now this is weird. On youtube it says it was on 'Nothing can stop us' (which I have on vinyl in my shed) which came out in 82. But on wiki it says it was the B side of 'At last I am free' (another absolute masterpiece cover) which was released in 1980. So 1980 it is.

Without wishing to turn this excellent thread in to a political one, I'd like to post two versions of Strange Fruit, first sung my Billie Holiday, and the version I'm familiar with by UB40. I was doing a crossword and whilst researching to help me with an answer I came across an article about Billie Holiday where I learned of her original version.
After reading the Wikipedia page of Strange Fruit, I had to listen to the two versions and heard them in a completely different light now understanding the origin of the lyrics.

It's not political to say that UB40 became pretty crap after a decent first couple of years.

Maybe not the best song I've heard today. Yes, it's a song that's been played to death by just about every radio/t.v station and busker/person learning guitar around the world but this clip is a little piece of history that I thought was worth sharing. The very first performance of wonderwall. Backstage, Glastonbury 1995. Song starts about 1:20 in.

Another great song from the 80's, I'm pretty sure the Maisonettes were one hit wonders, I may be wrong, but I certainly can't remember another hit by them.

This popped up on my Cocktail hard drive this afternoon. A moving version, apparently close to how it was originally composed. Neil is really putting his all in to this, what with singing, playing harmonica and his feet paddling away on the pump organ.
