1914 was - there was a feeling that the football was good for morale, but subsequent seasons were cancelled
1939 started but was cancelled after a few games
There was football but the Football League was suspended. What took its place was a series of regional leagues. These changed season by season. In 39/40 the Albion played in two leagues (South B and South D), in 40/41 in League South, in 41/42 a London league etc
There were no registration so players from other clubs could and did turn up and play. And there were no set number of games, so teams could play 30-odd games while another team played a dozen
Interestingly for the current debate, the league postion - given that not everyone played the same number - was decided by average points per game.

And after the war, the leagues restarted with the teams in the same leagues - which is what we should do this time.

For those who don't know. Albion lost 18-0 at Norwich on Christmas Day 1940. A silly match.
1 first teamer, 3 youngsters and a borrowed player from Bolton.
The rest were offered up by Norwich or came from the crowd.
In the war years you took your boots as well as a flask to the match.

It was actually Lord Kinnaird
He was given the old trophy in 1910 and his family held it for 95 years.....

39 to 45 Aldershot had the likes of Frank Swift ,Jack Rowley,Joe Mercer,Stan Cullis,Tommy Lawton,and Dennis Compton guesting . All huge players in their day.

I've got a Norwich mate who jibes at me about this scoreline occasionally, normally after a good few beers
My response is a similarly glib, "must have been more of our lot off fighting than your lot"
Sadly that's as grown up as our conversations get

Is the correct answer, as I kept telling my Pompey-supporting colleagues when I was the only Albion fan where I was working at the time. If they'd asked "which club?" rather than "who?" I'd have given them the answer they wanted to hear!
And presumably if you were good enough you would be arrested for not being in the forces or whatnot?
