Where is 'the cloud'? Now you're going to say it's just banks of storage in data centres. That may be so, but these centres are now so huge they account for a huge percentage of electricity. How about this, Despacito (that annoying song) used the same amount of energy as Chad, Guinea-Bissau, Somalia, Sierra Leone and the Central African Republic used in one year.
Watch this, it's interesting.

Don't you think it was like, just a little like dumbed down?

https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-uks-co2-emissions-have-fallen-29-per-cent-over-the-past-decade

One for the oldies.

TLDR highlights

UK 29% carbon reduction in 10 years.
Coal Power stations down to 2% of electricity generation.
Oil (vehicles are getting more efficient, but people keep buying bigger and more powerful cars) and Gas (home heating) are stubbornly not budging.

Analysis excludes carbon impact of imported goods, (including for all that manufacturing we have lost) and International flights.

You could argue that pre-cloud, every organisation ran their own machines, but only utilised a small percentage of the capacity, resulting in huge waste. In the cloud world, everyone is sharing the same cluster of machines, with machines being switched in and out according to the demand. This is a more efficient use of resources.

Few, very large data centres is more efficient than lots of small ones.

The Luddite experiment failed a long time ago. Progress and change are unstoppable. It's what we humans do
