'GERMAN police accompanied a group of fanatical supporters from Bayer Leverkusen as Brighton and Crystal Palace fans clashed at the weekend.

Around 60 fans from the club in Cologne, Germany, were in the Brighton end at the Amex on Saturday - in support of the Seagulls as they played their bitter rivals'

Wouldn't happen in Germany

"The 50+1 rule is an informal term used to refer to a clause in the regulations of the Deutsche Fußball-Liga. The clause states that, in order to obtain a license to compete in the Bundesliga, a club must hold a majority of its own voting rights. The rule is designed to ensure that the club's members retain overall control, by way of owning 50% of shares, +1 share, protecting clubs from the influence of external investors. "

So no investor is meant to own more a majority of shares and instead the club's members (board + fans) are meant to always own the majority.

50+1 is the long standing concept in German football where club members (fans) own 51% of the shares. Herr Hopp is a billionaire and now owns around 95% of Hoffenheim. He got around the 51 + 1 rule because....well, he's a billionaire and that kind of money talks. German fans who are big on tradition and view clubs as 'their' clubs and not a rich mans hobby or brand vehicle, plus are very aware of the situation in the Premier League where many clubs appear to have lost their soul, are furious and see this as the first step of the kind of extreme commercialism that has blighted the Premier League. Hopp also comes over as quite arrogant and has a touch of the Bellotti about him. He's quite litigious and has threatened to sue various supporters groups who had the audacity to criticise him in the past. The protests against him have been going on for a few years, but it came to a head after Dortmund fans were banned by the DFB from away games in Hoffenheim for two seasons. The DFB had previously stated there would be no more collective punishments against fans after a previous dust up. They went back on their word & this has created solidarity amongst fan groups who normally despise one another.

There are several other side issues as well - One being, the DFB introduced a three step protocol for referees to follow when there are protests against Hopp which includes the option of a game being abandoned. No such protocol exists for situations where a player makes a complaint of racial abuse. The DFB have been accused of being more proactive towards abuse against a rich sponsor than a player of colour or other ethnicity.

The issue exploded over the weekend. Tonight is the first of two matches in the quarter finals of the German Cup. (DFB Pokal) Schalke v Bayern Munich is tonight. Watch this space.....

How did they get tickets for the game, with it being a sell out, and 7000 on the waiting list ?

Sometimes you are an insightful poster and actually contribute but other times you're just a siht stirrer. This is one of those times you're just stirring.

Presumably they are loyal MyAlbion+ members and bought tickets made available through the ticket exchange. There was a thread last week in the run up to the Palace game where some were moaning about the number of tickets still available for this game as they thought it should have sold out ages ago. Lots of tickets went on the exchange and were available to members.
