No, it was a nasty necessity which brought the end of the war more quickly.

I disagree. "nasty necessities" were operations like Mers-el-Kebir and Hiroshima. We didn't need to firebomb a city with the sole intention of killing the population and terrifying those that survived. Germany was on its knees and allied victory was inevitable.

If you look at it through the prism of it being the action of a war weary nation who was still losing a lot of soldiers a day trying to break through to Berlin to end the war, the morals look different than if you look at it by how we would do things all these years later

I file it under, not great, but I can understand why

The city was a major industrial and transportation hub. Scores of factories provided munitions, aircraft parts and other supplies for the Nazi war effort. Troops, tanks and artillery travelled through Dresden by train and by road.

So yes the sole intention was killing the population.
