I’m with you Easy, don’t get this sport at all.

People obviously having fun with it though so each to their own.

Indeed, if people enjoy it then go for gold. But in terms of sports, its possibly the LEAST skilful one on the planet. Shelling peas looks more challenging.

How on earth anyone can actually sit down and watch this dreck is quite beyond me.

How many team sports are England reasonably good at?

Hmm.. one.

Required skill to win in that sport?

Hmm...

No wonder you find it difficult shelling peas!

Hmm...are you seriously suggesting that handball is a more skilful sport than cricket ? Really ??

Anyhoo, England are 'reasonably good' at plenty of sports other than cricket. Not necessarily always worldbeating, but certainly decent. Off the top of my head, football, rugby union, cycling. We have World Champions in boxing, athletics and F1.

Not too shabby. OK I guess we're shit at handball, but I think I can live with that, being as I'd rather sit down and watch my freezer defrost than tune into that junk.

Of course handball is more skillful sport than cricket. No doubt and not even close.

Well I said team sports. Rugby union is probably true.. I bet you are in the top 5 of Gaelic football, giridone, caber toss, croquet and kidney pie eating as well... along with the other five nations who do it. I'd rather mop my floor than watch any of it. And trust me, I'm not a keen floor mopper.

Dodging around a sports centre fuzzing an undersized kiddy's football around ?

Wow. If you genuinely believe that handball is a more skilful sport than cricket - where you're dealing with a small, hard 5.5oz ball being bowled at 90mph+ with spin, taking into account (in an instant) the condition of the pitch, weather conditions, field placings...

If you've ever been to watch cricket live, I doubt you'd make such an absurd statement. The speed of the bowling is terrifying, the timing of the batsmen is borderline superhuman. I saw Kevin Pietersen slash what was then the fastest 50 in Ashes history at the Oval a few years back off 30-odd balls. It was mesmerising. I was sat facing across the wicket, and it blew my mind how they timed the shots with a ball coming at them at that speed. I was simlilarly awestruck when I took in a few MLB games in the US too, just witnessing the sheer speed the pitchers hurled that ball. How anyone gets a bat on it is unreal.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING in handball would ever compare with that. Not even close.

Croquet and kidney pie sounds hard work. We usually have steak and kidney pie over here:)

Of course I genuinely believe it is more skillful than cricket. Dribbling, passing, handling a ball in extremely high tempo and trying to score against six players who are Dan Burn tall and allowed to pretty much beat, push you, grab you and throw you on the floor.

If you've ever been to watch handball live, I doubt you'd make such an absurd statement. The pace of the sport is terrifying, the brain, physique and ball handling required of the players is borderline superhuman. I saw Ljubomir Vranjes twist and turn and dribble his way through Mark Dragunski in the unfairest matchup in handball. It was mesmerising.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, in cricket would ever compare with that. Not even close.

:lolol:

OK champ.

Suit you up, give you a bat, and put you in front of Jimmy Anderson for an over ? Or stick you in goal for a game of "handball", and lets see what you'd think is tougher after that. Actually, I know what you'd think, but what you'd openly admit to is an entirely different matter. Obviously.

You would not get so much as an outside edge. You'd be lucky if you walked off avoiding a mild concussion.

Your ignorance of all things handball has cost you the chance to watch one of the greatest matches, in fact greatest sporting occasions ever tonight - a real ‘where were you? moment’ and epic drama that will be written into the memories of all sports fans.

Dang. And there I was, wasting my evening watching an epic game between the Packers and the Buccaneers to decide who goes to the Superbowl. I've gotta get me this handball channel. I'm clearly missing out!

Do I get netball and monster trucks with it ?

By now I realise that you do the equation "fast & hard balls = skill". And if that is what skill is about, then you are correct - cricket is more skillful. It also means pretty much no footballer got any skill whatsoever. Messi & Maradona may be able to dribble a bunch of players, but the ball is not hard and fast so they dont have any skills. Got it.

As I see it, skills is about more than that and thats why I prefer handball. Different taste, I guess. That said, pretty sure you would suffer a concussion or two if a 200 cm 110 kg dude throws himself on you crushing you on the floor repeatedly for 60 minutes.

For me... skill is a good Pierre Thorsson spin shot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhm7DX4u0Ow

or a sick Tomas Svensson save...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgJnN5mlxQY

or indeed a hard 90 mph shot...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUjxBxJNWaE

... but with the difference that there's a lot more to handball than "throwing hard and fast".

I think perhaps we will have to agree to disagree? You dont like handball, I dont like cricket. Its not much more complicated than that. I think we might have broken new ground however, this might be the first handball vs cricket discussion ever since it is two completely different sports. Its like discussing what requires most skill out of ski jumping and water polo.

Thats so tragic. Tragic.

However, ESPN2 still has the Baltic Tractor-Pull Championship rally next month live from Latvia. Gustav Bollockov is defending his European title in his all-conquering Skoda MV12, but expect to see a strong challenge from Yuri Sukmekokubic in his suped-up 12 cylinder Yugo Yastava.

I'l be flicking between that and the handball for sure.

If only... surprisingly easy victory for Sweden, was expecting a drama.

Probably will be remembered by more Europeans than any cricket game though, as handball is a lot more popular in Europe than cricket is and probably ever will be.

Ohhh its tractor-pulling time again? Might be interfering with my plans to watch one-of-endless-sports-no-one-gives-a-shit-about-outside-UK-and-former-colonies... guess I'll have to get my dose of British from being the first ever person to look for British porn on Pornhub instead..

That's a silly analogy - you've gone to a ridiculous end of a spectrum to try to make an irrelevant point.

Running along with a ball gripped in your hand before chucking it towards a goal is INFINITELY easier than trying to dribble along with a ball at your feet before shooting. The ball is gripped in your hand FFS, its not out in the open. Are you going to dispute that ?

I'm not even a massive cricket fan, but I can certainly recognise that its a game that involves FAR more multitudes of refined skillsets than handball. Which is why nobody watches handball, its just one of those niche little minority sports. Easy to pick up and play - a doddle - which is why its popular in some quarters as a participation sport. But very few people give a shit about it, because nothing about it is ever spectacular or interesting.

If anyone gave a toss about handball, it would get some decent coverage. It doesn't. That should tell you all you need to know. Its about on a par with archery.

Well that´s an unwinnable discussion trying to say cricket is better more skillfull than handball or vice versa. Having played cricket as a boy in Brighton and then learning handball when I moved to Copenhagen, I can vouch to Swannsman & Easy Boy that they are both great but very different sports. And both much much better than my two pet hates as "sports" American Football and Synchronised Swimming.....
