It’s interesting to see the almost complete radio silence from the mainstream media when it comes to reviews of the debut Unknown T project; Rise Above Hate. Drill music is the bogeyman of the music scene. A vicious, snarling ball of knife crime and gang violence and Unknown T spending 7 months on remand in prison facing a murder case probably won’t help with that image, even though he was found innocent.

However Rise Above Hate is actually a really good album and surprisingly varied. There’s even a (admittedly short) R&B tune on there. It’s interesting that someone who is trying to escape the gangster lifestyle has his means of escaping that life restricted in an attempt to curb gang culture. A completely backwards situation.

Just to show you the level places seem to be going to ignore it. iTunes have it 29th on their album charts. The Official/BBC update charts don’t have it in the top 100. ???

The Mercury’s were announced yesterday. Rather commercial this year but dominated by female acts and artists including Brighton’s own Porridge Radio and it reminded me of the excellent Anna Meredith..... who I forgot about after leaving her last vinyl on a tram.

A couple of albums I’m enjoying at the moment are Rufus Wainright and Daniel Avery’s latest.

It's obviously a big seller but I'm glad Kiwunika is on the list. I don't like a lot of modern soul but listen to vast amounts of 60/70s stuff but that's a really good album.

Holy **** - Deleter (for anyone who (like me) has ever enjoyed Hot Chip but wished they were just a bit harder edged).

I love Kiwanuka and as good as the album is, I'm not convinced it's as good as Love & Hate, although I'm struggling to think of any albums from the last decade that's as good as that.

As an aside, I've actually got a few albums from that list: Moses Boyd, Porridge Radio, Laura Marling. I also prefer Marling's previous album, Semper Femina, but Moses Boyd is great, and love PR too.

Love and hate is great too, don't get me wrong and yes I think they're two of the best albums of recent years

I'm loving All Messed Up by Angel Olsen, which is a stripped-back, atmospheric re-write of the tracks that featured on 2019's All Mirrors, which really showcases the strength of the songwriting. The number of females singer-songwriters that have emerged in the past decade or so is quite something.

I’ll give this a spin.

Pleased to see the mighty Molchat Doma included; excellent band. I also feel a bit sorry for them, as they signed to Sacred Bones, had their first two albums re-released on vinyl and were gaining a lot of attention and momentum and also had some decent tours lined up. Covid stopped all this.

Head’s up everyone! We’ve got a new project out on 4 December! ‘Not From Where I’m Standing’ is a lovingly put together collection of 20 Bond film themes covered by current and former members of Cinerama and The Wedding Present. 100% of the profits from its sale will be donated to the ‘Campaign Against Living Miserably’ [CALM] charity. More info as we go!

I have already decided what my album of the year is going to be and I haven't heard a note of it yet.
