Why are there full stops in “What. Is. Happening” ? Is this a new thing I need to get up to speed with?

It's a way of conveying a way of speaking. What is happening?' can be read as quite casual and low interest as it flows in a relaxed way. 'What. Is. Happening?' is more deliberate and shows a sense 'oh my word, I can't believe what is going on'. But it is less shouty than 'What is happening?!'.

Ah OK thanks for clarifying. This replaces typing WHAT IS HAPPENING then? I prefer that but no doubt I’ll grow to love this new speak
