Why would the political border be relevant? The most northerly part of Ireland is in the Republic.
That's true but then the southerly part of the island of Ireland would be "southern Ireland" as opposed to Southern Ireland.

But the territory was never formally called Southern Ireland. It was called the Irish Free State until it left the Commonwealth in the late 1940s.
