True - but i guess it's difficult to mount bug guns in rubble - so the writing was on the wall as soon as the B52s
got going. The German crack troops may well have held out - but not for too long.

'Big' guns and artillery is what I meant.

I am not usually a pendatic person but I can't let this go.
Sorry.
The bombing raid was on 15th February 1944 and it wasn't until 18 May, a Polish flag followed by the British Union Jack were raised over the ruins.

Another pedant writes re: the bombing of Monte Cassino.

As far as I aware of there were no B-17s stationed in Italy, all the 4 engined heavy bombers were in the 8th Air Force based in the UK (mostly East Anglia).

The US bombers based in Italy were twin engined mediums such as B25 Mitchells (a la Catch 22 which was of course set in Italy) or B-26 Marauders.

Agreed the bombing was a huge mistake and delayed it being captured. Didn't stop the Allies doing the same to Caen just after D-Day.
