I take it you haven't been down the A40 into London recently.
There are new style blocks of flats popping up.
The old ones coming down, being replaced by the above to fill London's housing shortage.

TBH I don't know, I'm guessing the standard of life has improved, but the cost of living along with London rental prices has ballooned.
