Not my cup of tea back in the day (right wing tory), but I feel for they guy after hearing him on the radio today.

Whoever made up the policy that all claims of historical abuse should be assumed to be correct, without any need to do any basic chacks, needs to be brought to book.

Apologies if fixtures but I was expecting to see a relevant thread on the NSC front page and didn't.

Unfortunately this is a by-product of the Saville era. Back then the police took no notice of the many complaints that were made about Saville and got caught with their pants down (so to speak).

The upshot of that now is that any lunatic can make allegations and the belief is the accuser must be telling the truth, which clearly in this case he wasn't.

Both sides of the coin bring heartbreak and misery!

It's a problem, with policing, when special units are set up, after these sort of accusations, that they often go looking for things that sometimes aren't there.

Agree about the politics, but nobody deserves what he has had to go through. Awful.

Never thought I would utter these words, but I feel even more sorry for the family of Leon Brittan, who was caught up in similar false allegations, but died before the truth came out.

Imagine going to your death bed, in disgrace, for crimes you didn't commit.

Funnily enough, something similar was mentioned in passing in the documentary about The Met last night. A specialist rape crime unit, got disbanded (after the successful case the doc covered). Thereafter, local detectives will pursue rape cases.

Couldn't agree more. I've just seen him interviewed on C4 News and was really touched by his stance. The judgment is simply shocking, however, how on earth the Met for that bizarre collection of litany of events ought to be beyond anyone.
I also agree with the point about Leon Brittan.

I was equally unhappy at the sanctimonious way the BBC reported it. Pure hypocrisy on their part.

I remember them barely covering the Savile allegations for nearly a week while Sky and ITV were doing exactly that.

As for the poor blokes here, my heart goes out to them and their families. 18 years for the crime feels both bizarrely lengthy and yet thoroughly deserved.

Forgive my ignorance but what did Watson do? I saw Proctor angrily denouncing his role in this but don't know what he did.

The arrogance of The Met’s Commissioner and Tom Watson. Refusing to discuss today’s damning report by an independent legal expert.

Instead The Met issued a short statement, in part disagreeing with many findings.

The victims have lost everything, some died not knowing that their innocence would be proven.

According to some reports Watson kept pushing the police to investigate when there was little evidence. He supported 'Nick'. For me the sadest part is that Proctor lost his home fighting the allegations - he should be hansomely compensated for that. Also, those accused of such crimes should not be named until found guilty.
