"Clear and obvious" should be apparent within a few seconds.

If it drags on, clearly it isn't obvious.

Yes, this - if that is the criteria then it shouldn't be used for spotting people a micrometre offside, for example. Get rid and let us all get back to complaining about the decisions instead of VAR

“ The codification of offside was a giant step in football’s evolution because it coincided with the legalisation of the forward pass.

Until then, football was like rugby; backwards only. ”

Oh dear, someone has forgotten to brief Stephens on this law change.

This! And critically I want to return to going bat shit mental when we score rather than the increasingly half arsed effort at the moment as you know someone is all over a replay looking for an excuse to disallow.

As an aside, I had NO idea that this was ever the case with Association Soccerball. Backwards passing only must've been a cuffing nightmare to rule on, what a weird spectacle that must have been (insert obligatory Hughton obervation here).

Good article - agree with him totally about the nonsense of the offsides. Don't agree about Burnley's incorrect corner - don't want var to get involved in those at all. If we have to have it simply just use it for howlers - actually the Zaha pen against Arsenal recently (I think) was perfect. Booked for diving when it was a clear pen. Quick reversal of an important decision (even if it did benefit the idiots up the road).

If VAR just stayed with the CLEAR AND OBVIOUS stuff, which is what it was supposed to be used on, then overruling that blatantly incorrect corner decision would've been a piece of cake. You didn't even need a bloke in a studio to call that, most people saw it in realtime. The main problem is, they've taken the use of VAR to forensic levels, and thats NOT what they said it was being brought in for.

I heard a perfect summation by somebody on the radio, who said that VAR should only be used to correct the occasional Maradona / Henry handball travesty, NOT a Lundstrum toenail maybe being offside.

Inevitably though, mission creep has decreed that VAR must get involved in every major call of a game now, no matter how subjective and marginal it is. That is where it is failing - they are striving for a perfection that can never possibly exist in a subjective call. If there has not been a clear and obvious error in the original onfield call, then just leave it the f*ck alone.
